GAME ON by Victoria Denault
(October 10, 2017; Forever Yours eBook; $3.99; Hometown Players Series Book 6)

“I don’t break hearts. I break headboards…”

When it comes to scoring in the pro hockey league, Alex Larue is crushing it—with the hot puck bunnies.  He’s the life of the party, the guy with all the jokes… and the one whose Party Guy mast keeps the real him well hidden.  The last thing he needs is anyone finding out about his troubled past, or the nightmares that haunt him still.

Brie Bennett is less than impressed by Alex from the moment she meets him.  And even though he insists on volunteering at the charity she runs, she doesn’t trust him.  He’s hiding something…but so is she.  She’s not just the rich privileged New York princess he thinks she is.  The animosity between them is undeniably addictive and as their worlds keep colliding it becomes supercharges with something else—attraction.  But if they stop playing games and let each other in, they both might lose.

GAME ON by Victoria Denault

Excerpt

I look around at Alex’s sparse apartment. There’s a sectional, an ottoman, but no chairs, bookcases or pictures. The nook for his bedroom only contains one three-drawer dresser. His bedside lamp is on the floor beside the bed because it doesn’t have night tables. “You don’t seem to like things.”

He shrugs, and those deep blue eyes find mine. “I don’t have a lot of things from my past worth holding on to.”

Oh, this man… I reach up and gently cup the side of his face. He grasps my hand and I think he’s going to pull it away, but he doesn’t. He holds it to his face and pushes into it. He’s like a puppy looking for love, and I want desperately to give it to him. But he won’t let me.

“And you seem to want to throw away things now that are worth holding on to.” I force myself to step back and start walking toward the front door because if I don’t leave now I’ll let things happen that are going to mean more to me than they should. Than he wants them to. But his words stop me in my tracks.

“I don’t know how to be a boyfriend, Brie.” The look of pure confusion on his face would be comical if we were still talking about his inability to run a dishwasher. But we’re talking about feelings here. “The only thing I’ve ever committed to was hockey and even it tried to reject me. Hell, in a way every time I get traded, I feel like it still is. But it’s a thing, not a person. Hockey doesn’t have a choice, but you do.”

I start to walk back into the kitchen as he turns away from me to look out the window. “People who have had the choice to keep me in their lives never have.”

Thank God he’s turned away because I actually press my palm to my heart to keep it from cracking. Holy shit. I have no idea how anyone would walk away from him – the man and his big, broken heart –because what I want to do is run to him. “Give me that choice and I’ll change your track record.”

He grunts and turns back to face me. “You’re this amazing, stubborn, gorgeous woman who wants more than the one thing I know I can give. And as much as I suddenly, for the first time in my life, want to try and give more, I’m so fucking clueless as to how.”

I walk right up to him so we’re toe to toe. “You want to know how? You just do it. You let me in. You take the chance, like you do every time you step onto the ice. You don’t know if you’ll win or lose, but you play the game anyway and you take the shots on net even if you don’t know if you’re going to score. So tell me you want this. Take the shot.”

He nuzzles my hand and but then turns his face and kisses my palm. When he turns back to me he looks so serious it’s startling. “I want this.”

I smile. It’s not big, but I feel it inside me from my toes to the roots of my hair. “Game on?”

He smiles back, raw but darkly playful. “Game on.”

An unlikely attraction brings comfort, joy and unforgettable romance this holiday season!

Librarian Julia Winston is ready to ditch the quiet existence she's been living. She's made a list of new things to experience, but falling for Jamie Caine, her sexy military pilot neighbor, isn't one of them. Julia's looking to conquer life, not become the heartbreaker's latest conquest. But when two young brothers wind up in Julia's care for the holidays, she'll take any help she can get—even Jamie's.

Happy to step in, Jamie reveals a side of himself that's much harder to resist. Not only is he fantastic with kids, he provides the strength Julia needs to tackle her list. She knows their temporary family can't last beyond the holidays, but the closer she gets to Jamie, the more she wonders if things could be this merry and bright forever…

Unlikely hearts connect and make for an endearingly emotional read! They say opposites attract and anyone looking at them from the outside would definitely say this was Julia & Jamie, but beneath the surface they are more alike than anyone knows. They both have injured hearts that they have hidden away because they now doubt their own worth in the game of love. As two little boys tear into their lives, they find themselves connecting with the innocence of these children and the fact that they need them. The plot is well contrived, and an enjoyable read. We see many familiar faces and build on the magic that Haven Point is all about. Loved it!

Librarian Julia Winston might have played along with a recent self-help book she read and made up a list of how she was going to change her life this year, but she never expects the changes to start happening so fast! She finds herself suddenly entrusted to care for two little boys who could use her nurturing heart to protect them in their time of need. They just so happen to bond with her new upstairs tenant as well … sexy pilot Jamie Caine!

Jamie might have the reputation as a player, but he’s got a deeper soul than that. He has a past that makes him keep himself casual with everything around him. He focuses on the job that he loves and his boisterous family, and he’s content with that. When he finds himself entrenched into a little make-believe family with his landlord and her adorable little charges, he finds he quite likes it and might want to keep her in his life for real!

Excerpt:

“I’m back in town.”

“For how long?” he asked quickly, too quickly. In fact, if she wasn’t mistaken, anger laced his question. She must have reacted to it because his features softened. “Sorry, it’s none of my business. And I do remember that today is your birthday. So, happy birthday, Carissa.”

“Thanks,” she said, and meant it. She decided to offer an olive branch because the truth was that she’d dumped him and she hadn’t been kind about it. This icy reception she was receiving was well deserved. While she knew the reasons behind her decision, she’d never let Jasper in on it. She’d been a bratty, selfish teenager, not capable of understanding her emotions. Unwilling to admit that Jasper had always reminded her of her father and that summer her dad had dropped a bombshell on her.

“I don’t know how long I’ll be in town. I’m sort of in a transition period right now.” He waited patiently. After another long drink of beer, she finished. “I just got divorced.” Saying the words out loud left an awful taste in her mouth. An acidic aftertaste of yuckiness.

First, shock flashed on his face. Then, true concern shone in his eyes. “I’m sorry,” he said.

And that might have been her undoing. Because he had every reason to be stiff and awkward with her. Instead, any kind of compassion from him loosened her lips.

“Today is my twenty-ninth birthday. I’m having a beer next to my ex-boyfriend, who hates my guts, in a dive bar in the town I swore I would never step foot in again. An ex-boyfriend I should really apologize to because I was an evil witch to him.” The words were flying now. She gripped her hand tightly around her glass. “I’m not even thirty and already I’ve been married and divorced. And I got divorced because he freaking cheated on me.”

She couldn’t miss the way Jasper’s eyes narrowed, his hands curled into fists, and there was a definite tic in his clenched jaw. “He cheated on you?”

“Yep. Apparently, the fact that I was homecoming queen, prom queen and head cheerleader did nothing to impress him. Or keep his pants zipped up when anyone wearing a skirt in the Central Time Zone walked by. That probably makes your whole day, doesn’t it?”

He slammed his hand on the bar and she jumped. But she just as quickly composed herself. “What? You have every right to revel in my misery after the way I broke up with you. I got divorced. You win.”

His eyes narrowed. “I don’t want to win at that game. And I certainly don’t want to hear that some idiot cheated on you. I’m sorry you’re getting divorced.”

“That makes one of us.”

When his wife, Tess, died, tech mogul Jeremy Kincaid's perfect world broke apart. Their young son is the light of his life, but Jeremy can't shake suspicions that her death was no accident. Did presumed-dead Livia Colton orchestrate Tess's car accident? Jeremy risks everything by enlisting beautiful PI Adeline Winters to uncover the truth.

Adeline once served as Tess and Jeremy's egg donor and surrogate. Giving up her baby was the hardest thing she'd ever had to do, yet she can't turn down Jeremy's plea for help now. But Adeline and Jeremy must push aside their slow-burning attraction when kidnappers place the ultimate bargaining chip on the table: their son.

Suspenseful action with lots of heart string tugging! I really enjoyed the premise to this story … he loses his wife, is left to raise their son on his own, and reaches out to a PI to see if his wife’s death really was an accident — but the PI just so happens to be their previous surrogate and bio Mom to his son! It had a great underlying connection between them, but unfortunately it struggled to play out in a way to keep me connected with the story line. It really felt like there were too many possible bad guys and the constant going from one direction to another pulled the attention away from the core plot. It had great possibility with the core characters, but too much of a mish-mashed story line to be satisfying.

Tech mogul Jeremy Kincaid adores his son and will do anything to give him the life he deserves. He lost his wife when their son was very young, and he can’t let go of the suspicion that her car accident wasn’t truly an accident. He decides he needs to pursue it once and for all and see if he can get the answers he needs to let it rest.

Private investigator Adeline Winters is thrown when Jeremy contacts her to investigate his wife’s accident. She was previously their egg donor and surrogate for their son, so she’s surprised he would reach out to her now. She never quite got over the heartbreak of handing over her baby, so when handed the opportunity to see him again, she jumps at the chance. Time spent together leads to bonding between them all, and Jeremy isn’t sure he even wants to deny the attraction he feels for her anymore.

Will he pass the daddy test?

With his job in jeopardy, it couldn't be a worse time for Sheriff Nate Landry's recent past to come back to haunt him. But it would take an army to stop SWAT team leader Julie Smith. The fellow cop—and sister of his ex-fiancée—wants one thing from the beleaguered lawman: custody of the toddler son that Nate didn't know he had.

He may not be natural daddy material, but he quickly takes a shine to little Duke. And then there are the feelings Nate's been hiding for years. Only now Julie's running for sheriff of Harmony Valley—against him. Time to retreat? Not if he wants a future with the woman he loves.

An endearing story about forgiveness … of other people, and of yourself! I enjoyed watching the connection between this man who thought he would be no good as a father with the little boy who stole his heart at first glance. It was bittersweet to hear all of the sadness they had all endured, but watching them work through their pain was very rewarding. I was a bit thrown by the way they would instantly be thinking back to the past in the middle of a scene, but overall, I really enjoyed the writing style, the plot and the characters!

Sheriff of Harmony Valley, Nate Landry has an easy-going life as the law in a small town one minute, and the next minute the job that means a lot to him is all of a sudden in jeopardy when the town busy-body wants to make heads roll for things not going the way she wants them to! As if that isn’t upheaval enough, who should suddenly show up in his town but the sister of his former fiance … with a toddler in tow who looks awfully familiar!

Julie Smith is recovering from some work issues herself, and still reeling from the loss of her sister … and the last thing she wants is to be in the company of her former friend Nate Landry. She has hated him for years since he broke her sister’s heart on what would have been their wedding day … and she’s only here for as long as it takes for him to sign over custody of the son he didn’t even know he had!

EXCERPT:

How exactly did he manage to look like sex on a stick at the end of a long day? He had this whole badass look going on, late-afternoon scruffiness over his jawline, making her want to rub against him like a cat.

Bad, bad Carly. “I wanted to talk to you about something anyway.”

“Oh, yeah. I haven’t had a whole lot of luck finding another sitter. I’ll make a few calls tonight.” He followed her into the family room.

“That’s not it. I need a favor.”

“Done.”

“You don’t even know what it is yet.”

He gave her an easy smile. “Doesn’t matter.”

“Be careful, Levi Lambert. You never know what I might ask.”

“Bring it on.” His eyes filled with obvious male appreciation.

She was reminded of her bare legs. The look he slid her was so full of heat that she thought her panties might spontaneously burst into flames. Focus, Carly, focus.

“I want to put photos of Grace on my website. I took some cute ones today.” She took her phone out and showed them to him. Shots of Grace staring with delight at a tree as if she’d just discovered them. Smiling as she watched a child playing ball, staring wide-eyed at a woman walking her poodle down the street.

“You took her to the park. She loves it there.” Levi didn’t take the phone from her, but instead held her wrist and brought the phone up closer.

Her stupid wrist tingled as if it thought it might be about to have a good time. She cleared her throat. “I know. Just look at this one. I think she noticed a cloud for the first time.”

He grinned, still holding her wrist. “Nah, she saw one last week.”

“Right. So…is it okay if I put her photos up? She’s an adorable baby.”

“Fine with me.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll never share her real name with my readers. And no one has any idea that the company is based in Fortune. My mother took great precautions to protect our privacy.”

“I trust you.” His big, rough hand slid from her wrist to her elbow, and the tingle traveled.

“Thank you.” She stared at his lips, willing him to kiss her. “The trust is…important.”

“Extremely.”

That talented hand now settled on her waist and pulled her closer. And somehow her hands were squeezing his biceps and she went up on the balls of her feet to get closer still. He kissed her long and deep, his hot, wet tongue insistent. It got wild and crazy as her hands fisted his shirt and his hands palmed her ass.

“Levi.” She broke off from the kiss, breathless. “We probably shouldn’t do this. It’s not…a good idea.”

He pressed his forehead to hers. “You’re right.”

Great. He agreed with her. “It’s stupid.”

“Yeah.” He tugged her in tighter and kissed her again. And again.

She threaded her fingers through his hair and moaned into his mouth.

And they continued to be crazy stupid for the next hour.
