Who says opposites can't find love?

A robbery followed by the discovery of a forgery at a respected art gallery thrusts Chelsea Owens into the center of an investigation headed by Detective Sam Eldridge. The instant chemistry between the high-spirited aspiring curator and the tall, dark, brooding cop is a classic case of opposites attract.

Complications arise when Chelsea uncovers a connection to an unsolved art heist. Teaming up with Sam to find the stolen paintings ignites feelings that could lead to lasting love. But Sam isn't ready to move beyond the tragedy in his past, no matter how promising his future with Chelsea could be…

Delectably mysterious! We find ourselves in the middle of a crime scene quickly in the latest from Kate James, and the air of mystery only intensifies when strange happenings occur in the neighboring business as well. I really enjoyed the intrigue of trying to play a guessing game with ourselves of who the guilty party was … the romance fell a little flat though. Overall a solid read!

When Chelsea Owens barged into the middle of a crime scene, she never expects to meet the man of her dreams! Arriving to work at the art gallery, she notices police activity at her elderly friend’s jewelry store next door and dashes in to offer them comfort, crossing paths with the lead detective.

Detective Sam Eldridge would normally be irritated with a civilian crashing into his case, but he can’t deny an instant attraction to the feisty lady determined to stand by her friends. As his investigation starts to unravel, there seems to be more going on in this neighborhood than they expected at first glance. Between a destructive break-in, forged paintings, and the possibility of breaking the art theft of a lifetime, Sam is going to be busy!  He tries to push his attraction to the wayside while the case is pending, but she’s not an easy one to get off his mind!

Exclusive Excerpt:

Parking right at the nose of her Jeep, he got out. Tried to appear non-menacing. Which was the complete opposite of how he’d approached pretty much every situation for half his life. Hell, even the women he’d dated had known what he did and gotten off on the idea of his dangerous life.

The marshal had given him some pointers on how to come off as normal. One thumb tucked into the waist of his jeans, so it didn’t look like his fist was braced for action. Other arm relaxed at his side. She’d said something about a loose walk, but Rafe only knew one way to walk. To be safe, he stopped almost immediately.

“Hey there. Do you need some help?”

She turned to him with a whirl of her olive-colored skirt. It was too long to flash him any leg. But the motion did part her denim jacket to reveal a skin-tight orange tank. Too bad a green scarf covered what Rafe expected to be pretty spectacular breasts. “Only if you’ve got some sort of magic wand that’ll fix my tire.”

“I don’t like to talk about my magic wand before I buy a girl dinner.”

She cocked her head. Looked left, then right, then back at him. “You know, we’re all alone on a forested stretch of highway. Maybe save the sexual innuendo for a better time and place?”

“Name it, and I will.” Because she wasn’t scared of him. Nothing about her posture had gone defensive after he’d made his comment. Which, yeah, was sleazy and cheap. Rafe had to remember that he wasn’t in a big city with nine million people anymore. The disposable dating pool was limited. Probably not even eight thousand.

Sauntering forward—which proved the woman wasn’t scared of him—she gave him an up-and-down stare. Fair enough. Rafe did the same to her. Except he didn’t make it even partway down. He stalled out at her eyes. They were a smoky green; the color of the pine trees behind them, wrapped in fog. Bedroom eyes. Yeah, he could stare into those all night . . . and all the way through to breakfast.

“Okay,” she finally said. “You’re cute. But why should I give you a chance?”

Rafe liked that she went toe-to-toe with him. “I’m the one doing you the favor, remember? Turnabout is fair play.”

“What favor?”

“I’m going to fix your car.”

“Really?” She brightened all over, from her suddenly sparkling eyes to a bounce in her hair and a twitch in her ass as she rushed back to the tire. “I called for a tow truck, but they said it’d be more than an hour.”

“I don’t have a magic wand, but if you hand me that jack, I’ll get that flat off and the spare on in less than ten minutes.”

She shot him a sassy smirk. “This is one time when speed won’t count against you, I promise.”

It had been tempting to watch her for a little bit longer. Everything about Darcy was so expressive that even though Ben hadn’t heard one word of her exchange with the security guard, he had been able to imagine the entire conversation based on the look on her face.

It was highly entertaining.

“What are you doing here?” she asked, her expression one of total confusion.

“Savannah called me and told me you weren’t able to get on a flight. So here I am,” he said, offering her a small smile.

She frowned.

Seriously? Even when he came to save her, she was still pissed at him?

“What if I had gotten on a flight between the time Savannah called you and the time you got to the airport?”

He shrugged. “Then I would have made a very perilous trip for nothing. I would have gotten here sooner, but people don’t know how to drive in the snow. I passed a bunch of accidents.”

“You could have been one of them.”

Another shrug. “I have a truck that happens to be exceptional in the snow, and I’m used to driving in it. It wasn’t a big deal. You need to drive slowly, and you’ll be all right.”

Darcy looked around and made a noncommittal sound. “So you just got here, huh?”

“No, I’ve been here for a while. I couldn’t get past security, and it took some time to page you. I tried calling you several times, but I kept getting a message that all circuits were busy. I guess with the storm moving in and all.” He paused and gave her a lopsided grin. “Anyway, I saw you when you were on the escalator, but you didn’t see me.”

“There’s, like, a million people here,” she said with a hint of sarcasm. “And I wasn’t looking for, well, you.”

He frowned at her tone. “What did you think you were coming here for?”

“Honestly? I thought my brother had been able to charter a plane for me.”

He couldn’t help but chuckle. “Sorry to disappoint you. But the only charter you have is me—in the form of a truck and a trip back to the lake.”

“Oh. So I guess I’ll get a room at the hotel,” she said, and he noticed she wouldn’t look directly at him.

“I just planned on bringing you to the cabin until the storm is over and flights are back to normal. It won’t be more than a couple of days. No need for you to have to go to a hotel or anything.”

Now she did look at him. “No, really, it’s okay. I’d prefer to go to the hotel.”

She was looking at him with a hint of defiance, and he figured he’d let her have her way for now. The sooner they got on the road, the better. There was already a very real possibility they weren’t going to get home until after dark. It would be pointless to drag this out.

“That’s fine. No problem.” He motioned toward her suitcase. “I’ll take that for you. Let’s get going.”

“Oh.”

Ben could hear the relief in her voice and smiled to himself. For right now, he was happy to have a truce with her. They had a long drive ahead of them, and he’d rather it be peaceful rather than tense and awkward.

He waited while she pulled her coat out and got herself together, and then they made their way out to the parking garage. The traffic was insane, and he prayed it wasn’t going to be as bad as he was fearing.

It was.

And it was tense and awkward.

A SEAL’S STRENGTH by JM Stewart

Blog Blitz Excerpt

Maybe he was right. Maybe it was time she was honest with him.

Careful to keep her voice low, she turned her head and looked off down the street. Honesty might be the best policy, but she couldn’t force herself to look into that disarming hazel gaze while she said the words.

“I wasn’t prepared for this. I was prepared for a weekend. A little fun with someone I trusted once. That’s different, you know, than a hookup in a bar. But you’re…you. It’s childish, really, to still feel that way. To be jealous of a dead woman.” She heaved a sigh and finally forced herself to look at him. “But I am.”

Her insides shook as she waited. That was the most she’d ever told him. She didn’t know if she actually wanted his response and yet part of her craved it. A holdover from all those years ago. Back in college, she’d wanted him to know she’d fallen in love with him, because she’d held out this hope he’d tell her he loved her back. Pathetic that the need still hovered beneath the surface.

Those keen eyes worked her face. Then, finally, he smiled, warm and alluring. “So, dinner? Next Friday?”

There was that sexy smile she’d known would make an appearance, and she was caving, exactly the way she’d known she would.

She heaved a sigh and nodded. “Fine. You win. I’ll have dinner with you next Friday. But since I owe you for the car and clearly you’re not taking my money…”

“Nope.” He winked, eyes gleaming with playful impishness and a touch of smug self-satisfaction.

Giddy, happy little butterflies took flight in her stomach. “Then I’m cooking.”

One dark brow arched and the corners of his mouth twitched. “Can you do that?”

This time, her facade cracked. She punched him in the shoulder. “Yes, thank you very much. Contrary to popular belief, I have actually grown up.”

Those gorgeous eyes glinted at her. “So you have.”

“Friday. Six o’clock. Don’t be late.” She pivoted and marched toward her car, determined to get away from him before she embarrassed herself. As she reached into her purse, however, it hit her. Gabe had her keys. She halted, sighed, and, face hot as Hades itself, turned back.

Gabe stood grinning at her, his right arm extended. He jangled her keys, dangling from his thumb and forefinger. “Missing something?”

She rolled her eyes and strode back to him, but when she reached for the keys, he held tight to them.

“I look forward to seeing you, you know. I’ll say it again, in case you missed my point last time. Were you anybody else, that first date wouldn’t have gone this far.” He finally released her keys and winked at her. “And I won’t be late. I’m never late.”

EXCERPT

Mrs. Sinclair took Chelsea’s hands in her own. Her grasp was cool and unexpectedly firm. “It’s all lovely, my dear. I’m certain our gala will be a success.”

“I hope so,” Chelsea murmured. “I’ve positioned your chair next to the Angelo bronze,” she said, gesturing. “Oh, and here comes Sandra with your tea.”

“Thank you,” Mrs. Sinclair said, as she accepted the cup from the waitress. “That’s very sweet of you, but enough worrying about me.”

“I’ll keep Grandmother company,” Joel assured Chelsea. “Why don’t you go mingle and sell some art,” he said, not unkindly.

“I’ll do that,” Chelsea responded with a grateful smile for Joel. “If you need anything, Mrs. Sinclair, please let me know.”

Chelsea did as Joel suggested, and she began to relax. Every indication was that the evening would be a triumph. They’d received a few advance bids above the reserve for the works that would be auctioned at the end of the evening, and she personally made a couple of minor sales. Then she saw Mr. Anderson, one of their faithful patrons, standing in front of a Babineux, obviously admiring it. If she could make that sale, it would be a bonus to an already fantastic event.

“Hello, Mr. Anderson,” she said as she stopped beside him to look at the painting of a woman and her child.

“Good evening, Chelsea.” He smiled at her briefly before turning his attention back to the painting.

“Henri Babineux, as I’m sure you know, is one of the most renowned artists of his day. This piece was painted circa 1862. Today is the first day we’re showing it. I don’t think we’ll have it long. Wouldn’t it look fabulous in your collection?”

“You might be right,” he replied. “Excellent turnout, by the way. I don’t usually go for these types of events, but I couldn’t resist coming this evening to see what new treasures you might have available.”

“I trust you’re not disappointed.”

“As a matter of fact, I’m not.”

She stepped a little closer and lowered her voice. “Should I get a Sold sign for it?”

“Now, now! I might be known for impulse buying, but even I’m not quite that spontaneous.” He turned shrewd eyes on her. “However, you could tell me how much it would set me back if I did decide to acquire this painting.”

Chelsea named the number in the mid six figures and knew that as pricey as it was, it wasn’t out of Mr. Anderson’s range.

His expression turned contemplative. “Let me think about it while I help myself to a glass of champagne and see what else might capture my interest.”

“Please do,” she said, not in the least disappointed. If she was a betting person, she would’ve laid money on Mr. Anderson’s buying the Babineux sooner or later. She was familiar with that look in his eyes. Once he’d moved on, she turned back to the painting. It wasn’t her preferred style, but she recognized the artistic talent. More important, she knew that the Babineux was to Mr. Anderson’s taste. She then studied the abstract next to it.

“Help me understand what, exactly, this painting is supposed to represent.” The deep voice, with a touch of humor, had Chelsea glancing over her shoulder.

Her courteous reply caught in her throat as she found herself staring into familiar bold blue eyes. “Detective Eldridge, I didn’t know you had an interest in art.”

His laugh was warm and masculine at the same time. “I don’t normally, no. And when I do, I tend to like…ah, the more mundane.”

He was standing so close, she could see the faint stubble of a day’s growth of beard, and the fine lines at the outer corners of his eyes and mouth when he smiled. There were a few strands of gray in his black hair. His scent, clean and woodsy, teased her nostrils. She let her gaze slide over him. She was sure there was a fit and impressive body under his conservative suit.

“I hope I’m not underdressed,” he said.

Chelsea felt the heat rise to her cheeks. She obviously hadn’t been as subtle in her perusal of him as she’d hoped. “Oh, no, you look perfectly fine.” Now she could feel her cheeks burn even more. “What I meant is your attire is fine. Black tie is optional. Are you here for professional or personal reasons?” she rushed on, wanting to change the subject.

“A bit of both.”
