Excerpt

Dr. Sturlusson didn’t seem the type to leave her high and dry, but perhaps something unavoidable had happened and he hadn’t been able to contact her.

She should’ve told him not to bother picking her up and she should’ve gone with the car-rental plan in the first place.

Betty glanced up at the signs overhead, trying to figure out where to go to rent a car when she saw something move out of the corner of her eye.

She looked over her shoulder and her mouth hung open a little as an over-six-foot Viking of a man came marching toward her. Quickly.

His eyes were trained on her and her knees instinctively weakened, because even from a distance there was an air of command about him. His hair was a dark blond and he had an athletic build. She was pretty sure that he could easily pick her up and toss her a long distance, despite the fact that she was pretty tall herself at five feet nine.

He stopped a few feet from her, those piercing blue eyes settling on her as his gazed briefly raked over her form, assessing her. It sent a shiver down her spine, but not one of fear. His assessment of her was something else, something almost sensual. He didn’t smile, his lips pressed together firmly, his strong jaw clenched.

She knew from his posture that he wasn’t happy about being here and that got her back up a bit. Why was this stranger staring at her with annoyance? It wasn’t as if she were blocking his way, but then again maybe most people made more of an effort to get as far out of his way as possible.

Linc has two very important things on his mind—professional football and his motorcycle club.

What he does not have on his mind is the woman that drives him crazy and makes him want to do stupid things, like throw caution to the wind.

Nope, not Linc.

At least, that’s the lie he tells everyone.

In reality, every time Conleigh’s name is mentioned, he squirms.

She’s everything that he wants, wrapped up in a cute little package that is stamped ‘hands freakin’ off.’

She’s four years younger than him, in school to be a doctor, and thinks football is stupid.

Even more, Linc and Conleigh get along like oil and water.

There’s not a single second that they’re in each other’s presence that they’re not at each other’s throats.

But all it takes is hearing that she’s in trouble for Linc to drop every single thing—football and MC duties alike—and head to her side.

A side that he’ll remain at until they either kill each other, or finally give into the heat between them.

Either way you look at it, he’s well and truly screwed.

Forbidden love just found a way! With the next book in the Bear Bottom MC series, we get Linc and Conleigh’s story. As a new reader to this author with this series, I feel a struggle in trying to keep up with what’s happened in the past series sometimes. In some places explanations are weaved into the context, and in others they aren’t and the reader is left fending for themselves trying to keep up. This book showed tidbits of the biker lifestyle more than the first in the series, but the intrigue of the bad guy seems forced and lacking in substance. Overall, a solid read with a believable connection between the main couple.

Professional football and a motorcycle club don’t seem like a likely pairing, but Lincoln James wears it well! He’s just coming into the off-season when he hears that Conleigh might have gotten herself into a little trouble that she needs him for. He’s been in love with her for years, but he was warned away from her by multiple sources in the MC because she was too young when they met. Since then, she’s been a constant thorn in his side as she tries to pretend that she doesn’t feel the same things that he does.

Nursing is a job that she enjoys, but going to school and trying to move up in that field is not. She feels like she’s got too much on her plate right now and something’s eventually going to have to give. Now that Linc is hanging around her on a regular basis, she needs even more free time than ever … after all, she has to pretend she’s so busy enjoying life that she’s too busy to have anything to do with him, right?

Who needs mistletoe?

Most people wouldn’t think of a bad Santa case as the perfect Christmas gift. Then again, Molly Malone, office manager at Hunt Investigations, isn’t most people, and she could really use a distraction from the fantasies she’s been having since spending the night with her very secret crush, Lucas Knight. Nothing happened, not that Lucas knows that—but Molly just wants to enjoy being a little naughty for once . . .

Whiskey and pain meds for almost-healed bullet wounds don’t mix. Lucas needs to remember that next time he’s shot on the job, which may be sooner rather than later if Molly’s brother, Joe, finds out about them. Lucas can’t believe he’s drawing a blank on his (supposedly) passionate tryst with Molly, who’s the hottest, smartest, strongest woman he’s ever known. Strong enough to kick his butt if she discovers he’s been assigned to babysit her on her first case. And hot enough to melt his cold heart this Christmas.

Hot, humorous and oh so fun! With the next book in her much loved Heartbreaker Bay series, Jill Shalvis brings us Lucas and Molly’s story. They’re a really adorable couple together, and as we learn more about each of their pasts, it only brings them closer to our hearts. I felt like the bad Santa case was a bit weak, but the relationship between Lucas and Molly was so enriched that it made it a great book regardless! Really enjoyed them!

Lucas Knight is blown away by the fact that he woke up with Molly Malone in his bed … and can’t remember a thing about how she got there! Did they … or didn’t they? Molly is quick to lay on the details in an exaggerated way … which leads him to think she might be yanking his chain. Wouldn’t he remember?

Molly might be pulling a fast one on Lucas, but if she finds out that he’s been sent to babysit her as she takes on her first case, there will be consequences! A bad Santa stealing from his elves is sure to keep her attention as she delves. When sparks keep flying anytime she and Lucas are in the same vicinity of each other, they eventually stop resisting!

EXCERPT:

Chapter One

It took Lucas Knight longer than it should have to realize he had a woman in his bed, but to be fair, he had a bitch of a hangover. Even worse than that, last night was a blur, prompting him to take quick stock. One, there was a bundle of sweet, soft curves against him. Two, his head was currently threatening to secede from the United States Of Lucas. And three, his side hurt like … well, like he’d been shot.

It’d been two weeks since he’d gotten caught in some crossfire on the job and he hadn’t yet been cleared for more than light duty – something he’d obviously managed to ignore last night given that he was palming a nice, warm, feminine ass.

Think, man.

Straining his brain, he remembered taking a pain med before going to O’Riley’s Pub to meet up with some friends. A client had been there, someone he’d recently helped save from a multi-million dollar corporate espionage. The guy had ordered shots to toast to Lucas and … shit. Knowing better than to mix pain meds and alcohol, he’d hesitated, but everyone had been waiting on him, glasses hoisted in the air. Thinking just one shot couldn’t hurt anything, he’d knocked back the drink.

Clearly, he’d been wrong and it’d been enough to mess him up big time, something he hadn’t been in years, not since his brother Josh had been killed. Shoving that away for another time – or never — Lucas cracked open one eye, but when his retina was stabbed by a streak of sunlight glaring in through the window, he immediately slammed it shut it again. Taking a deep breath, he told himself to suck it up and opened both eyes this time, learning two additional facts.

He was naked and completely uncovered.

And the woman snugged up at his side was rolled up in his comforter like a burrito.

What. The. Hell.

A few more images slowly began to filter into his brain. Kicking ass at the pool table and winning two hundred bucks from his boss Archer, who ran Hunt Investigations where Lucas worked as a security specialist.

Dancing with a sexy brunette…

And then making his way upstairs, but not alone.

His head was pounding too hard to remember anything more, but clearly the brunette had not only come up, but stayed. She was cuddled up too close to see her face, especially with the way she had the entire blanket wrapped around herself. The only thing visible was a mass of shiny brown waves peeking out the top.

Holding his breath, Lucas slowly pulled away until he could slide off his bed.

The brunette’s hair never so much as quivered.

Letting out a relieved breath, he shoved on the clothes he’d so thoughtfully left for himself on the floor – seriously, he was never taking another pain pill or drinking alcohol again – and headed for the door.

But unable to do it, unable to be the guy who just walked out, he stopped and detoured to his kitchen to make her a coffee. Leaving her caffeine was a nice gesture, right? Right, but … shit. He was out of coffee. Not surprisingly since he usually grabbed his from work because Molly, who ran the office at Hunt Investigations, made world-class coffee. And since one of the benefits of living on the fourth floor of the Pacific Pier Building and working on the second floor meant convenience, he texted the coffee master himself:

Any chance you’d send up a cup of coffee via the dumbwaiter?

A few seconds later, from his bedroom came a cellphone buzzing with an unfamiliar tone and he froze. If his plan was to leave before the awkward morning after – and that was always the plan — he was on borrowed time.

Since nothing came back to him from Molly, he moved onto Plan B and scrawled out a quick note: Sorry, had to get to work, take your time.

Then he hesitated. Did she even know his name? Having no idea, he added: I’m leaving cash for an Uber or Lyft – Lucas.

He dropped some money next to the note and grimaced at himself for still being a complete asshole. He stared down at his phone.

Still nothing from Molly, which meant she wasn’t going to save the day. She was smart, sharp, and amazing at her job, but for reasons unknown, she wasn’t exactly interested in pleasing anyone, especially him. Locking up, he left his apartment.

The Pacific Pier building was over a century old and sat in the center of the Cow Hollow district of San Francisco. It was five stories of corbeled brick, exposed iron trusses, and big windows built around a legendary fountain. Retail and businesses took up the ground and second floors, with residential on the third and fourth. The fifth floor penthouse belonged to his friend Spence Baldwin, who owned the building.

All of it was currently decorated for the holidays like it was about to star in a Hallmark movie.

Lucas jogged down two flights of stairs to Hunt Investigations, fully prepared to be blasted by Molly at her front desk. Not just for his text, but for his appearance at all. Off duty since the shooting, he wasn’t supposed to be back at work until next week, and that was if his doctor cleared him. But Lucas couldn’t stay home another day, a fact that didn’t have anything to do with the stranger in his bed.

Or at least not all due to the stranger in his bed.

He scrubbed a hand over his unshaved jaw, feeling incredibly tense, which for a guy who’d apparently gotten laid last night, didn’t make much sense.

Nor did the fact that sitting on a bench outside of Hunt Investigations front door were two old ladies dressed up as elves. Knitting elves.

The one on the left looked to be making a Christmas stocking. The one on the right was working on something too small to see. They smiled at him in greeting, lips coated in bright red lipstick. Left elf had a smudge of it on her teeth and her little elf cap seemed to quiver on top of her white hair.

Right Elf pulled out her phone. “I just got a text from Louise,” she told Left Elf. “It says, ‘Don’t be late for work tonight, Santa’s turned into Grinch. SMH.’” She blinked. “What does S-M-H mean?”

“Shaking my head,” Left Elf said.

“Oh thank goodness,” Right Elf said, putting a hand to her heart. “I thought it meant Sex Might Help.”

They both cackled over that before they saw Lucas.

“Hello there, young man,” Left Elf said. “We were hoping you were Molly. We’ve got a problem involving a bad Santa and she said to meet her here.”

“A bad Santa,” Lucas repeated, starting to wonder if maybe he was still in bed dreaming this day.

“Yes, we work for him. Obviously,” Right Elf said, gesturing to herself.

“You’re … Santa’s elves,” he said slowly. “And you work for him at … the North Pole?”

“Right.” Left Elf snorted. “We work right here in the city like you, at the Christmas Village in Soma, in too tight of costumes for too little money. Honey, didn’t your mama ever tell you Santa isn’t real?”

Okay, so they didn’t believe they were real elves. That was a relief. Lucas had a great uncle who sometimes thought he was Batman, but that was only on the nights he drank away his social security checks with his cronies.

“Santa promised us half of the profits,” Right Elf said. “To go to the charities of our choice. Last year we made enough to give big and hit up Vegas for a long weekend.”

Left Elf nodded with a smile. “I’ve still got Elvis’s underwear from that big impersonator party we were invited to, remember, Liz?”

Liz nodded. “But this year, we’re not getting anything. Santa says there aren’t any profits, that he’s barely breaking even. But that can’t be true because he just bought himself a brand new Cadillac. Molly’s my neighbor, you see.”

Lucas didn’t see at all. He was good at certain things, such as at his job of investigating and seeking out the asshats of the world and righting justice. He was good at taking care of his close-knit family. He was good, when he wanted to be, in the kitchen. And – if he said so himself – also in bed.

But he was not good in social situations, such as those that required small talk, especially with old ladies dressed up as elves. “This really isn’t the sort of case that Hunt Investigations takes on,” he said.

“But Molly said you’re an elite security and investigative firm that employs finders and fixers for hire, whoever needs them.”

Not strictly true. A lot of the jobs they took on were routine; criminal, corporate and insurance investigations along with elite security contracts, surveillance, fraud, and corporate background checks. But some weren’t routine at all, such as forensic investigations, the occasional big bond bounty hunting, government contract work…

Nailing a bad Santa wasn’t on the list.

“Do you know when Molly might arrive?” Left Elf asked. She was looking at him even as her knitting needles continued to move at the speed of light. “We’ll just wait for her.”

“I don’t know her schedule,” Lucas said. And that was the truth. Hunt Investigations was run by the biggest, badass he’d ever met. Archer Hunt, and he employed a team that was the best of the best. Lucas was honored to be a part of that team. All of them, himself included, would step in front of a bullet for each other, and had.

Literally, in his case.

The lone woman in their midst was Molly Malone, equally fearless, though in other ways. She was the one to keep them all on their toes. No one would dare venture into her domain at her desk and put their hands on her stuff to check her schedule, but he could at least ask around. “I’ll go check her ETA,” he said and headed inside.

He found Archer and Joe in the employee room inhaling donuts. Grabbing one for himself, he nodded to Archer and looked at Joe, one of Lucas’s best friends and also his work partner. “Where’s your sister?”

Joe shrugged and went for another donut. “Not her keeper. Why?”

“There’re two elves outside waiting to talk to her.”

“Still?” Archer shook his head. “I told them we wouldn’t take their case.” He headed out front. Lucas followed because if his social niceties game was stale, Archer had zero social niceties game.

“Ladies,” Archer said to the elves. “As I explained earlier, your case isn’t the kind of case we take on.”

“Oh we heard you,” Left Elf said. “We’re just waiting for Molly. She promised to help us personally if you wouldn’t.”

Archer looked pained. “Molly doesn’t take on cases here. She’s office staff.”

The two elves looked at each other and then tucked away their knitting. “Fine,” Left Elf said. “We’ll just go straight to her at home then.”

Archer waited until they’d gotten on the elevator before turning Lucas. “Why are you here?”

“Gee, good to see you too, bossman.”

“Let me rephrase,” Archer said. “How’s your side? You know, where you have a GSW?”

“It’s no longer a gunshot wound, it’s practically just a scratch now. I’m good enough to get back to work.”

“Uh huh.” Archer looked unimpressed. And … still pissed.  Lucas had been hoping that he’d gotten himself out of the dog house by now, but apparently not.

“I didn’t get a report from your doctor clearing you,” Archer said.

Lucas squelched a grimace. His doctor had told him – repeatedly – at least one more week. But he’d be dead of boredom by another week. “We’re having a minor difference in opinion.”

“Shit.” Archer swiped a hand down his face. “You know I can’t put you back on the job until he clears you.”

“If I stay home another day, I’ll lose my shit.”

“It’s only been two weeks since you were shot and nearly bled out before we got you to the hospital,” Archer said. “Way too close of a call.”

“Practically ancient history.”

Archer shook his head. “Not even close. And I told you to abort. Instead, you sent the team out to safety and then you alone hauled ass deeper into the yacht, knowing it was on fire thanks to our asshole perps trying to sink it for the insurance pay out.”

“I went deeper because there was still someone on board,” Lucas reminded him. “Their lead suspect’s teenage kid. He’d been holed up and had fallen asleep watching TV. He would’ve died if I’d left him.”

“And instead you almost did.”

Lucas blew out a breath. They’d had this argument in the hospital. They’d had it twice since. He didn’t want to have it again. Especially since he wasn’t sorry he’d disobeyed a direct order. “We saved an innocent. You’d have done the same damn thing. So would any of us.”

Archer looked over at Joe, who’d been silent through this entire exchange.

Joe lifted a shoulder, an admission that yeah, he might’ve done the same thing. And so would Archer, and Lucas damn well knew it.

“Shit,” Archer finally said. “Fine. I’ll unground you, but only for light duty until I hear from your doctor personally that you’re one hundred.”

Lucas didn’t dare smile or pump a fist in triumph. “Deal.”

Archer went from looking pissy to mildly amused. “You don’t know what light duty I’m going to make you do yet.”

“Anything would be better than staying at home,” he said fervently.

“Glad to hear you say that.” Archer jabbed a thumb at the door. “Molly’s going to want to take those elves seriously. She’s been asking to take on a case for months now, but our cases have all been too risky.”

Lucas rubbed his side. Wasn’t that the damn truth. “And?”

“And your ‘light duty’ job is to make sure she turns those elves down,” Archer said. “She’s not ready yet.”

Joe nodded his agreement on that and Lucas let out a mirthless laugh. He understood why Molly’s boss might tell her not to take on a case, but her brother should know better. “Hello, you’ve met her, right?” Lucas asked them. “No one tells Molly what to do.”

“Improvise,” Archer said, unmoved. “And keep in mind, you’re still in hot water with me. So be careful.” He looked at Joe. “Give us a minute.”

Joe looked at Lucas and left the room.

“You’ve got something else to say?” Lucas asked Archer.

“Yeah. Don’t screw this up. And don’t sleep with her either.”

Granted, Lucas had never been all that discriminating when it came to the fairer sex, but this was Molly they were talking about. She was the baby sister of his friend and coworker, which meant she was noton his radar. At least not during the day.

The nights were something else altogether because there’d been more than a few times where she’d starred in his fantasies – his own deep dark secret since he liked breathing. “I wouldn’t sleep with her.”

Archer looked behind him to make sure Joe had left. “Elle and I saw you at the pub last night, flirting with her.”

This had Lucas’s full attention. “What?”

“Yeah, and what the hell were you thinking? You were lucky Joe was late.”

He’d flirted with Molly? Was he crazy? He’d long ago learned to ignore the undercurrent of electricity between them because he had zero interest in mixing business and pleasure, and even less interest in hurting her.

And he would eventually hurt her.

Not to mention what Joe would do to him after he did. And if Joe failed in this new mission, Archer would happily finish him off, and they’d both have every right. But Lucas wouldn’t go there, ever. His job had come between him and The One a few times now, so he’d shifted his priorities. He still loved women, just not one woman — and he was good with that and who he was.

Except … sometimes, like two weeks ago when he’d almost died on the job and had been forced off duty, he knew he was fooling himself. He’d been left feeling far more alone than he liked to admit. He looked at guys like Archer and Joe, both who’d managed to make love work for them just fine, and he wondered what the hell he was doing wrong.

Drawing a deep breath, he thought of the woman in his bed two flights up. Maybe for starters, he should try to remember the name of the women he’d just slept with. “Trust me,” he said. “Nothing happened with Molly last night”

“Uh huh.”

“No, really. Apparently, I was preoccupied with someone else.”

Archer went brows up. “The new brunette at the bar?” He then clapped Lucas on the shoulder. “Glad to hear you’re not going to have to die today.”

“Yeah, well, when Molly finds out you’ve put me on babysitting duty, she’s going to kill us both.”

“That’s why she’s not going to find out.”

Lucas stared at Archer, a very bad feeling coming over him. “I’m supposed to keep it from her?”

“Now you’re getting it.”

Lucas didn’t know much about Molly’s past other than something bad happened to her a long time ago and she still had a limp from whatever it’d been. Joe had kept a tight lid on his and Molly’s rough childhood. Both brother and sister had some serious trust issues. He shook his head glumly. “This is worse than monitor duty.”

“Is it worse than dying?” Archer asked mildly.

Shit. Lucas went back upstairs. He needed a shower, fresh clothes, and a clear head before he faced Molly, as well as a good story because apparently he couldn’t tell her the truth. He hoped to hell that a long hot shower would clear his brain enough to come up with something believable, because something else Molly was – sharp as they came. He stalked through his bedroom, hit the switch on the wall and froze.

The brunette was still in his bed.

At the bright light flooding the room, she gasped and sat straight up, clutching the sheet to her chin, her hair a wild cloud around her face.

And not a stranger’s face either.

Molly’s face.

Molly was in his bed and his first thought was oh shit. His second thought tumbled right on the heels of that — he was going to die today after all, slowly and painfully.

He’d protect her from any threat…
But what if the biggest threat is him?

Doctor Anne Nichols is back in Oak Creek, Wyoming, only because she has no other options. Here, she was always the shy, stuttering girl, invisible to everyone.

Except Zac Mackay. The very reason she left in the first place.

Zac’s years in Special Forces taught him survival skills, and he’s created a company—Linear Tactical—to teach those skills to others, so they never have to live in fear.

Then why is Annie, the last person he’d ever want to hurt, afraid of him?

Zac’s determined to wipe the fear from the eyes of the woman who has never been far from his mind. And fix the mistakes—his mistakes—that put that look there in the first place.

But a predator has set his sights on Annie. And now survival skills will become much more than lessons…

Explosive chemistry! A riveting new series from Janie Crouch takes us for a delectable ride with a team of former Green Beret’s now that they’re settled back into civilian life. A great groundwork was laid of the history these guys have shared, so we have a story from each of them to look forward to. I was quickly drawn into Anne and Zac’s story and swept into hoping for a happy ending for them. The intrigue of the danger surrounding her could have been slightly stronger, but overall I really enjoyed the kick off to this new series and am looking forward to the next book!

Doctor Anne Griffin never imagined herself heading back home to Oak Creek, Wyoming, but life has a way of chewing her up and spitting her out when she least expects it, so here she finds herself with no other option. She left this town a broken, shy and stuttering young lady and she’s returning more sure of herself but hesitant of what type of welcome she will receive … especially from the man she ran from in the first place!

Zac Mackay’s years in the Special Forces taught him skills he has enjoyed putting to use in forming a survival skills and security company, Linear Tactical, with a bunch of his buddies. When a little accident lands him in the ER, he’s surprised to see Anne, but more importantly the fear in her eyes confuses him! He knows a little of what happened between them all those years ago, but honestly a good bit of that night is a blur, so what in the world is making her look like she’s afraid … of him?? He sets out to get to the bottom of that, but is waylaid a bit when danger rears it’s ugly head with Anne’s name written all over it!

“I was here a couple of years ago, but only for a day or two,” Anne told Zac, looking away. She had booked a room out of Oak Creek both times she’d dared come back. The thought of staying at The Mayor’s Inn had been too painful. She couldn’t even look at that hotel without feeling sick to her stomach.

And she’d avoided everyone—particularly Zac—as much as possible. Just in case his words about not coming back were still true. She tried to swallow the panic that threatened to overwhelm her. Maybe he still felt that way now, even though he hadn’t said anything at the hospital.

“There.” He pointed at her. “That look that just came into your eyes. I saw it at the hospital. It’s like you’re afraid of me, Annie.” He took a step closer and she instinctively one back. One of his eyebrows shot up, letting her know she’d proved his point. “Do you think I’m going to hurt you?”

“No.” Not physically. She’d never worried that he’d hurt her that way, despite having five inches and probably fifty pounds—all muscle—on her.

But he was right. She couldn’t continue living in Oak Creek with them ignoring everything that had happened that night. What had been said. What had been done. Maybe she would’ve tried to, and to avoid Zac forever, if he hadn’t ended up in her ER.

But the truth was, there weren’t enough bushes in this town for her to jump into. She was going to run into Zac. A lot.

Sometimes all you could do was face the past.

She pulled a breath in. “I’m not scared of you. I mean, I know you would never hurt me physically. For crying out loud, you wrecked your motorcycle rather than hit a dog.” She’d meant for her laugh to seem breezy, but it just sounded stilted. “But yeah, I mean, we can’t pretend like that night never happened. The stuff we did. Stuff you…we said.”

His eyes narrowed. “That night we spent together after Becky died.”

“Yeah. That night.” As if they’d had another. “The bottom line is, I can’t leave here, Zac. No matter what you said then, or even if you feel the same way now.”

He shook his head, brows furrowing. “I don’t expect you to leave. You’re obviously a respected doctor, more than competent. Why would you think I wanted you to leave?”

Some of the tension she’d been carrying since his arrival in the ER began to ease. He was right. Something said in grief and anger six years ago didn’t necessarily hold true all this time later. She was silly for thinking it did. “Okay, well, it’s good to know you don’t feel the same as you did back then.”

He took a single predatory step closer, and she tensed again. “I said something that night to make you think you needed to leave?”

She stared at him, her mouth flopping open like some sort of fish. “You don’t remember what you said?”

Those words would be engrained in her memory forever.

Get out and don’t come back.

He rubbed his forehead. “That whole night is fuzzy for me.”

I can’t even bear to look at you. You just betrayed the only person in this town who ever wanted you here.

Tossing her naked into the hallway before flinging her clothes at her.

“What do you remember?” She forced the words past a throat that seemed to have dried up.

His hand moved to the back of his neck. “Honestly, not much at all. It’s sort of a blur.”

She retreated a step from him again. That night had been the most important night of her life. The best. The worst. It had changed the very fabric of her being.

And it was sort of a blur for him.

One night to remember with the perfect cowboy…

Or one step toward the perfect revenge?

Nothing in Hannah Ryder’s plot included a hot fling with a drop-dead-sexy cowboy. Especially when her cowboy turns out to be Brock McNeill—a potential enemy with ties to the man Hannah wants to destroy. When an accident claims Brock’s memory, Hannah is caught in an intricate web of scandal, falling dangerously for the one man she shouldn’t trust…

Secrets exposed! With the final book in The McNeill Magnates saga, we get to find out what the big secret has been and tie up some loose ends of the series as well as get a glimpse into what’s been going on with some of our favorite characters from previous books. The amnesia twist in this story didn’t really do it for me, it felt a little forced and convenient rather than an integral part of the plot, however, the groundwork for the story was filled with intrigue. Overall this has been a great series with many arms of the family coming together to bring us a rich story line. Really enjoyed the McNeills!

Actress Hannah Ryder took this job on the set of Winning the West in order to spy and get revenge on the man who hurt one of her own. She can’t let herself be sidetracked by her hatred … but when a sexy cowboy walks into her scene, well, she can only withstand so much distraction before she buckles!

Hannah isn’t the only one keeping secrets when she meets and shares a night of passion with the sexy cowboy she only knows as Brock, but when she finds out her guy is none other than Brock McNeill, she isn’t sure how to proceed because he just might be protecting the man she’s out to bring down. A convenient case of amnesia just might be her saving grace!

The cowboy’s voice smoked through her, heating her insides and sending a shiver of awareness over Hannah’s skin.

Did she want a ride?

Her subconscious was going to have way too much fun tormenting her with that image in her dreams tonight. For now, she needed to stop fantasizing about sexy Brock, the rancher who turned her inside out with just a handful of words and a smoldering gaze.

Her legs were still unsteady after whatever it was that had passed between them inside the barn. She’d had meaningful relationships in her past. Men she’d loved. And yet no one had ever given her the sizzling shock to the system that she felt from being around this stranger. Swallowing hard, she braced herself as she turned around to refuse his offer.

“That’s okay. I don’t mind walking.” Her voice was soft and breathless when she needed it to be firm and sure. “I, um, could use the fresh air.”

She could also use a new libido. One that wasn’t quite so susceptible to tall, muscular cowboys. It must be because of all the stress she was under with her sister. She’d latched onto a pleasurable distraction and now she couldn’t quite let go.

Brock folded his arms across his impressive chest. God, his arms were amazing, too. She wanted to skim her hands up the triceps and over his shoulders. Instead, she jammed her restless fingers in the back pockets of her jeans along with her phone.

“You’d probably be fine,” he acknowledged. “You must have walked over here in the dark in the first place, although the moon was higher at that hour, making the path a lot easier to follow than it will be now.”

She had been thinking the same thing since she didn’t remember exactly where she’d broken through the brush to find the cabin. Nightfall in this part of Wyoming was nothing like it was in Southern California. Here, there was no ambient light of any kind. Just deep blackness and stars.

“I’ve got my phone,” she argued, although she was beginning to wonder what else might be out there in the wilderness surrounding the ranch lands. She’d heard wolves—or some kind of wild dogs—baying in the distance on the walk over here. “The cabin I’m staying in is just through there.”

She pointed vaguely, trying to see any kind of trail.

“I’m not sure calling someone will do you any good if you meet up with a bear. Or an elk. Or some other wild animal that wasn’t expecting company at this hour.”

She didn’t want to be foolish. So, in spite of the out-of-control attraction, she figured the best thing to do would be accept the ride and get home as fast as possible.
And put this encounter out of her mind.

“Is your truck nearby?” she asked, peering around the barn. During the shoot, there’d been a couple of golf carts and two trucks parked there.

A smile curved that hard mouth of his. Nodding, he relaxed his arms and walked past her, close enough for her to feel the warmth of his body, close enough for his sleeve to brush hers.

“My horse is right this way.”

“Horse?” Her belly flipped.

Not because she minded riding a horse. Only because it implied a proximity that…

A shiver stole over her skin. Her nerve endings danced in anticipation of touching him. Something her brain knew was a very, very bad idea.

“I—” Her voice wasn’t even there. She licked her lips. Tried again. “I’m not sure—”

“You’ll be fine,” he assured her, holding a hand out for her while he stood next to a dark horse with a glossy coat. “I’ll help you up.” He flipped the ring for her foot so it was easier for her to see. “Step into the stirrup and you’ll be home in no time.”

Her heart pounded a chaotic, fast beat. But stalling wasn’t going to get her home any faster. She understood that much. Willing herself to remain calm, she stabbed the toe of her tennis shoe through the foothold.

Brock’s hands were quick and efficient as he boosted her up onto the saddle. He didn’t linger. But he might as well have been massaging her naked body for how her skin reacted under her clothes. Her thigh tingled. Her waist…

She wanted his hands there again. Before she could gather herself or prepare for more, Brock swung up onto the animal behind her. His chest was against her back. Her hips tucked into the cradle of his lap, his strong thighs bracketing hers.

There was no space. No distance. And it felt so good she couldn’t have spoken if she’d tried. The only thing she didn’t like about it was that she shouldn’t like it so damn much…

A second chance...

A scandal ended the careers of the Wilder Sisters, the chart topping country rock band. But Lexi Wilder is okay with that, thanks for asking. She's been on the road since roughly forever, and even if the scandal has followed her home to Whistle Cove, California, Lexi is going to enjoy the break. After all, there's quite nothing like the beautiful sandy beaches of Monterey Bay to calm a woman's soul.

Luke Wyatt never asked to trade fame and fortune for the only woman he's ever loved. Now that he's finished a punishing year-long national tour, all bets are off. He's coming back to his hometown of Whistle Cove for the quiet, the beaches, the inspiration, and the girl. Not necessarily in that order. There's pressure from Nashville to deliver more country gold like the #1 song he co-wrote with Lexi Wilder.

But Lexi can’t forgive Luke for choosing fame over her…

With the first book in her new Wilder Sisters series, Heatherly Bell brings us Lexi’s story. We see her come face to face with her old boyfriend and get a front row seat as he tries to rekindle their flame. The premise of the story is interesting and the characters were quick to grab my attention. I would have preferred a little more depth to the backstory of their relationship and the timespan, etc. to give me a deeper picture, but overall a satisfying read. Looking forward to the sister’s stories!

Country newcomer Luke Wyatt is coming down off of the high of his first big country-wide tour, and he’s exhausted. His body aches, his mind is burned out and his heart hurts from the empty hole she left behind. He knows he needs to get on the songs everyone is stressing him to write, but his first stop has to be home. Whistle Cove, California … and her. He has to make her see she’s everything … and then he can get back on the path of his future.

Lexi Wilder was once part of a big country sensation herself … until scandal brought them down faster than they could turn around. Now running her Gran’s B & B is keeping her busy while she pretends not to notice all the headlines about him … the one that was too busy to be bothered with her once she wasn’t there by his side anymore … the one who with all of the women clamoring for his attention.

“Lexi Wilder.”

She recognized the deep voice, the smooth sound of whiskey if it could speak. Lexi whipped around to face Luke Wyatt. Her heart hiccupped at the sight of his long and lean body braced against the side of her cottage. One corner of his mouth tipped up in a half smile and he studied her with those deep and fathomless dark eyes.

Her mouth was dry. Knees? Liquid. “W-what are you doing here?”

“Wasn’t going to give you the chance to say you don’t want to see me.” He moved away from the side of the house and took a step toward her. “Tour’s over. I’m home.”

Despite her churning gut, she found her voice. “We have no vacancy. You’ll have to stay somewhere else.”

He went brows up. “Just checked in.”

When she didn’t speak, but simply swallowed and blinked, trying like hell to regain her balance, he filled in the silence.

“Still mad at me. Still won’t talk to me.”

She was so not prepared to deal with this today. With him. “Why would I be mad? You mean because you wrote an entire album all about our private life? Every single private and personal thing about us. After everything I’ve been through with Sabrina. No, why would I be mad about that?”

“Baby,” he said, squaring his shoulders. “It’s what songwriters do. We write about our life, the pain and the joy.”

I’d rather keep my private life private.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I was hurting. You wouldn’t take any of my calls. You wouldn’t come see me.”

“You didn’t seem to be hurting. You were all over my TV set, cozying up to gorgeous models and reality TV stars.”

She’d seen the woman practically on Luke’s lap at a televised awards show. And he was mad she hadn’t called him back? If he’d been hurt when she stopped taking his calls, he sure in the hell got over it quickly enough.

He took a step toward her making her take one back. No, no, no. Already she felt her body buzzing from being this close to him for the first time in a year.

“Give me a break, Lex. You know what this life is like. I didn’t even know that woman.”

Lexi did an internal face palm. No, no. It would not go this way. Check her out letting loose with all her pent up hurt and anger the minute he showed up, giving Luke every indication of how much she still cared about him. If she didn’t care at all, maybe the rumors of these women wouldn’t bother her so much. So she’d already blown her cover in the first twenty seconds of seeing him. Get a grip.

She’d expected to do much better than this if she ever ran into him again, say in Nashville while visiting Miranda Lambert to collaborate on some songs. Lexi would have another hit song by then. Maybe she’d be dating another handsome country singer not named Luke Wilder. She’d be over him by then.

Chalk it up to running into him so unexpectedly but this wasn’t how it was supposed to go. He shouldn’t still look so good to her, his beard making him look like a strong mountain man. Like a man who would take care of his woman.

For Luke, it turned out his career came first. Not her.

But the thing to do here was pretend it didn’t make a difference whether he stayed or left. Pretend he had that little effect on her. Maybe it wasn’t too late to salvage what little was left of her pride.

“I’m sorry.” She shook her head. “I’m being rude.”

He quirked a single brow. “Yeah?”

Score one for Lexi. She’d shocked him. Good.

“Of course. You’re a paying guest and I’m usually not so…so…”

“Pissy?” He gave her another smile, this one lifting both corners of his mouth and demonstrating he still had the power to render her speechless when he laid on the charm.

“Yeah. Pissy.” She let out a half-hearted fake laugh and waved hand in the air. “Rough day. You know how it is. Sisters.”

His brow furrowed. “And how’s Sabrina doing?”

Luke had a front row seat to the implosion of the Wilder Sisters. He’d been performing alongside them at the stadium in Oklahoma when Sabrina had her public mini-meltdown. Even though their demise as a band had meant his opportunity for stardom, Lexi didn’t doubt he’d been sorry about the way it had all happened.

When she’d been worried about Sabrina, whose entire life from the time she’d been ten had been the stage, Luke had held Lexi every night until she fell asleep, assuring her that Sabrina would survive this. They all would. And she’d fallen even deeper for the man. Luke reminded her there would be life after all the speculation and rumors. Because Luke Wyatt knew a lot about scandal. He understood what it was like to feel like you had to apologize just for being allowed to breathe the same air as everyone else.

“She’s okay. Still walks around with ear buds in all the time, singing and dancing. It’s in her blood. But I don’t think she wants to get back up on a stage anytime soon. None of us do.”

He nodded, as if he understood all too well. “And you. Are you still writing?”

Not with you.

Never again with you.

The wall was still up and there it would stay. If anything, she’d wallpaper it. But she was a Wilder first and foremost, and yes, they could put on a show.

She shrugged and got ready to lie. “Here and there.”

“I’m supposed to write a few more hit songs.” He held up finger quotes. “They want me back in the studio next week. So I thought I’d come here and relax. See if I can find some inspiration.”

His gaze took a slow slide down the length of her body and she almost felt…naked. She was so not going to be his inspiration. Not this time. He’d taken enough material from her already.

She took a breath and went for deep sincerity. “I hope you find what you’re looking for, Luke.”

And with that she opened the door to her cottage and closed it in his face.

Every family has its secrets… and its rebel.

Deep in the Cascade mountains, the Rockwell family has been running historic Rocky Peak Lodge for generations. But now, that legacy is at risk of disappearing forever.

Kai, always the rebel, would rather risk his life as a rescue paramedic than deal with his impossibly stubborn father, “Mad Max” Rockwell. Only one thing could bring him home—a real threat to his family. Especially in the form of a beautiful woman.

Nurse Nicole Davidson never pictured herself as a spy. All she wants is security for her disabled sister. Get some inside intel for a friend’s investment group while working for surly Max? She can do that. Until the outrageously sexy Kai Rockwell shows up and sets everything on fire—most especially her.

Equally determined, equally passionate about protecting their families, Kai and Nicole don’t know if they should be enemies or lovers—or both. All they know is they can’t resist each other…no matter the price.

The prodigal son returns … and sparks fly! With the first book in a new series, Jennifer Bernard brings us the story of a family who has had a ski lodge in their family for several generations, and as their father gets older, the need for one of the kids to step up and take over some of the day to day duties is approaching. The family is ripe with hidden secrets and confrontational avoidance, so watching the dynamics unravel is really moving. The characters comprising the family were quick to draw me in, and I’m looking forward to their future stories.

About THE REBEL

What would you do for love?

Ever the rebel, Kai Rockwell happily risks his life on a daily basis as a rescue paramedic. What he refuses to deal with? His impossibly stubborn father, “Mad Max” Rockwell, who runs the historic Rocky Peak Lodge deep in the Cascade Mountains with an iron fist.

But when his family faces an unexpected threat at Rocky Peak—in the form of a beautiful woman—Kai knows it’s time to go home.

Fiercely protective nurse Nicole Davidson would do almost anything to take care of her disabled sister–even accept a hefty offer to ask a few harmless questions at the charming old lodge where she’s working.

EXCERPT

“Want to know why we broke up?” she burst out, unable to listen to another second of his veiled accusations.

“Ye—”

“Because he wouldn’t accept my sister. He kicked her out of the house and didn’t care how much that hurt her. When she hurts, I hurt twice as much. Ten times.” Her words were stumbling over themselves in her passion. The harsh look on his face had vanished, and he was listening with complete and close attention.

“He only wanted me for arm-candy, that’s all. He thought I’d be happy he bothered with me, a complete nobody with a sister in a wheelchair, always scrambling between paychecks, working two jobs, sometimes three—”

“I’m sorry.” He reached out and caught her against him. Her breath caught in a hiccup of shock.

“I could have stayed, if I didn’t care about my sister, and I’d already signed his stupid prenup anyway, if that’s what you’re so worried—”

A grimace flashed across his face. Then, in the next second, her face was in his hands and…oh my God…he was kissing her. As if to stop her words, soothe her pain…or his…

And she opened up to him like a flower desperate for rain. All her hot emotion poured out of her.

His kiss was every bit as tumultuous as she’d imagined. His firm lips moved against hers, his tongue swept across the sensitive inner flesh of her mouth, spreading wild tingles everywhere it touched. He took command of her mouth, exploring and claiming at the same time.

Her body went boneless against him. His hand gripped the small of her back, keeping her upright against the onslaught of sensation. She melted against him, nipples peaking against his chest, hot desire liquefying between her legs. Pressing close, she felt the hard bulge behind his jeans.

So he felt it too, this wild attraction.

But he’d just accused her of being a fortune hunter.

Screw him.

She pulled away from Kai and covered her mouth with her hand. He looked just as rattled as she felt. His hair was rumpled and he was trying to catch his breath.

“Sorry,” he muttered again.

“You might need to narrow it down a little,” she snapped. “Sorry for accusing me or sorry for kissing me?”

He put his hands on his head and turned away from her. “Fuck. I don’t know anymore. Both. Neither.” He spun around to face her. “I wasn’t accusing you.”

“It sure felt like it.”

“Then I’m sorry.” He dropped his arms back to his sides, causing her heart to leap into her throat again. The air hummed between them. Somewhere outside, a guest shouted something and a car started up. “As for kissing you, I guess I’m not as sorry as I should be.”

Rock on! It’s always a joy to revisit the guys of Shaughnessy and get the lowdown on what’s going on in all of their lives, and it’s especially special to get updates on the Shaughnessy family that we’ve loved over the years. Julian was different than I was expecting him to be … mostly because he hit a wall and had to face the mess his life had become before we got to know his story instead of coming in when he was in his spotlight. I didn’t connect with him as much as I have some of the other guys, but I still enjoyed his story and watching him work the long road towards his happily ever after. Really great series!

Julian Grayson has been hiding from his life for months now, but he’s finally taking the step to move forward again by coming home. His life has revolved around being the drummer of rock band Shaughnessy for so years, so when his personal life took a dive in a public spectacle, he felt the need to walk away from it all. He’s back … but he’s not sure he can ever stomach being a public entity anymore. Meeting Charlotte, who doesn’t know him from Adam, gives him the chance to be anonymous for once, and he has to admit, he likes it!

Charlotte Clark meets a guy at a coffee shop who she perceives as being down on his luck. It’s exactly the type of person that she’s made it her life’s work to help, so she’s happy to add Julian to her list. The more time they spend together, the more they start to like each other and lean further into each other’s lives, but she has no idea who he is … and when she does find out, she’s spitting mad!
