When the doorbell rang, Fallon Wade’s heart jumped into a beat so furious, it stole her breath. He was here. She wasn’t ready, would never be ready, but she hadn’t been given a choice.

“This was fun,” I murmur as his fingers coast over my cheek.

He tucks a lock of hair behind my ears and traces my jaw. It’s been a year since a man has touched me. And no one has ever caressed me like this. It’s like he’s trying to memorize my features. I’m enthralled. It’s hard to know what to do next, so I clutch my hands in my lap and stare at him. His eyes lock on my lips and I realize I’ve seized the lower one between my teeth.

His breath hisses out on a soft sigh. “Do you have any idea how sexy you are?”

“No.” It’s not the default word anyone uses when describing me.

“You are.”

How many women has he used this line on? Hundreds surely. He’s a player. A guy you sleep with not someone you date.

At the moment I’m standing at the line that separates the woman I am and the woman guys like Zach sleep with a few times and never call again. I can listen to my body and have several amazing orgasms to relive over and over, or I can listen to my heart, stay true to who I am and keep looking for a guy who can make me happy long term.

His fingers curve around the back of my neck. As he draws me forward, I ask, “Are you going to kiss me again?”

“I’d very much like to.”

This time his kiss is more direct. Firm and determined, he claims my lips and as his tongue darts forward, I open for him. He tastes like the striped peppermint candy we snagged on our way out of the restaurant.

The kiss quickly goes nova. Heat explodes in my midsection and lances downward as Zach’s hand curves over my knee. I clutch his shoulder, trembling with longing. Phrases spill through my mind. Naughty things I’d want to say to him. Images of taking him into my mouth again and making him cry out my name as he comes. I’ve forgotten that I’m not the type who has sex in cars. A second text follows the first or maybe it’s just that reminder that I haven’t looked at the first one. Either way, it feels great. So does Zach’s mouth on my neck. And is that his teeth? I open my thighs, silently begging him to go higher. He’s so close. I’m so close.

Buzz.

I’m panting. He’s sucking on my earlobe. Shit. That’s amazing. His thumb grazes my nipple.

The hand beneath my skirt reaches the elastic on my panties and I shift my hips, pushing into his fingers. Can he feel how wet I am? A little higher, please.

The vibration is so constant it’s like a sex toy and I’m so close to getting off. Just a little bit more. His finger brushes over the soaked crotch my panties. The lightest of touch and my body is electrified.

A great first book in the series gives us the background of how their parents died and the girls came to live with their uncle. He was a womanizing bachelor, but he took his sister’s kids in and raised them. Now they all work for his firm as publicists to a lot of hot sports guys! Great characters, a lot of fun family interaction and some hot chemistry between the main characters keep us interested and intrigued throughout.

Annabelle Jordan has always been attracted to the hot, muscular guys they represent, so former football player Brandon Vaughn is no different. She sets out to help him manage some bad publicity that is coming up in regards to his new retreat that he’s building … but will she be able to keep her hands off of him?

Vaughn used to be her uncle’s star client until his ex-wife got her hands into his business. Yank was always really good to him, and he’s glad he’s finally getting a chance to make up the underhandedness to him and feel like part of his family again. He just hopes his attraction to his niece isn’t his downfall again! Will they succeed in finding out who is setting his retreat up to fail before it’s too late?

Another hot athlete takes center stage as The Hot Zone series continues. Yank and his nieces are still full force into managing athletes and the like! I enjoyed the continuation of the series, but didn’t connect with Micki and Damian quite as much as I did with Annie & Vaughn in the first book. I still enjoyed them and their story though!

Micki Jordan has always been the tomboy of the family, but she’s set her sites on a steamy baseball player, and thinks she’s going to have to pull out all the stops and get a little girly in her appearance to snag him!

Damian Fuller noticed Micki even when she wasn’t dolled up, but he knows he’s not the type of man she needs. He’s full-force ahead with his career and can’t afford distractions and she deserves so much more than that.

When he has a couple of scandals hit the fan and Micki steps in to help, they can no longer fight their desire for each other and have a fling … but he tries to forget her and continue allegiance to his career soon after it’s through … but life has a way of doing whatever it wants and he finds himself having to follow along and forge a new way of thinking!

The instant attraction dimmed a bit in this continuation of The Hot Zone series. Luckily they find their way back to each other later in the book and the excitement builds again. Fun characters with lots of family drama, work overload and funny antics of the cast around them keep us entertained and wanting more.

Professional baseball player John Roper was at the peak of his career a few short months ago, and then he hit a slump … and it went from bad to worse. He’s trying to rebound in the off season to come back fighting hard when the season starts, but his family is driving him crazy. He can’t take care of his body’s needs to heal and train if he can’t get a minute to himself.

Amy Stone has taken a job with her Uncle Spencer’s company and is now living in NY and working at The Hot Zone. She and John have a little chemistry explosion the second they lay eyes on each other and when they end up working together, they have to recommit to getting to know each other and forging a working relationship. Can she manage to wrangle his family for him and get him concentrating on himself and his comeback before it’s too late?

Really liked meeting more of the Raven Riders and getting to know what they stand for and a bit of their history as a club. It’s a steamy read and a really enjoyable one. The only thing that would have made it better was to see more of Ike and Jess. Looking forward to the next book in the series!

“So much better out here,” Haven said, the night air cool against the tingling warmth of her skin. Although she was pretty sure that not all of the heat burning through her insides was from the alcohol—her unusual flirtatiousness and closeness to Dare over the past half hour had made her desperate with a heat that had nothing to do with her drinking game.

She walked to the railing and leaned against it, chuckling a little at herself for needing the support it offered. She felt so damn free, and it was a heady, exhilarating thing.

“What’s funny?” Dare asked, settling a hip against the railing right beside her. Arms crossed, jaw ticking with tension, dark eyes blazing, he was staring at her like he wanted to reprimand her or devour her. Oddly, neither alarmed her the way she would’ve expected it to.

Haven shook her head, leaning it back and letting her gaze float over the night sky. Blurry points of light swam in the moonlit heavens. It was beautiful and peaceful despite the pounding bass beat of music thumping from inside the clubhouse. “Not funny, just good. Happy, you know? Being able to do something a little . . . scary, but knowing I’d be safe doing it.” When Dare’s gaze narrowed, she shrugged. “I don’t know.”

A long moment passed before Dare finally spoke. “You are safe here, Haven. Never doubt it.”

Peering up at him, she nodded, all kinds of words sitting on the tip of her tongue, challenging her to let them fly. “It’s weird feeling safe—or at least safer—after a lifetime of not. It makes me want to try things I could never let myself try before. It makes me . . .” She shook her head and dipped her chin.

Dare stepped closer, his thighs coming up against her hip. He lifted her chin and made her look at him. The contact combined with the command in the gesture lanced white-hot desire through her veins. “Makes you what?”

“Want to feel alive,” she whispered, her heart suddenly racing in her chest.

Dare’s jaw ticked again as his gaze swept over her face. She didn’t think she was imagining the raw emotion pouring off of him and wrapping around her, but she wasn’t sure if she was reading that emotion right or projecting her own desire onto him.

“Do you feel alive, Dare?” she asked, the alcohol flowing through her and the night spinning around her like she was walking through a dream.

“Jesus,” he bit out.

The rough desperation in his voice made her wet between her legs. “Just once,” she whispered, not sure what she was asking him for.

But he seemed to know. Because his hand was suddenly tangled in her hair and his mouth was suddenly on hers, claiming, probing, tasting.

Haven moaned and parted her lips, inviting him deeper.

Dare jerked back from her, his fingers rubbing roughly over his lips. “Fuck, I’m sorry.”

On instinct, Haven’s body pursued his, pinning his back to the railing. “Please don’t stop,” she said as her hands gripped his shoulders. She had the strongest urge to climb him, to wrap her legs around him, to grind against the hard bulge pressing electrically against her belly.

“Please,” she whispered, tilting her mouth toward his. “I liked it.”

Dare’s hand cupped the back of her head. “You’re killing me.”

“Dare,” she said, her body restless against his.

In a move that sent the world spinning, he flipped them around so that she was the one pinned against the railing. He pushed his legs between hers and leaned down over her, forcing her to arch her back, to yield, to open to him. “Tell me what you want from me. Say the words,” he said, his eyes absolutely on fire.

Her heart was a runaway train in her chest, frantic and picking up speed. The thought of giving voice to her desires was terrifying and thrilling and dizzying all at once.

“I want your mouth,” she said. The words sounded odder out loud than they had in her head, but they were more accurate than asking him to kiss her—because her mouth wasn’t the only place she wanted his.

“Jesus,” he rasped again, his mouth coming down on hers once more.

The whimper she released was part relief, part anticipation. It had been so long since she’d kissed someone that she felt a little uncertain, but Dare’s intensity barely allowed her the capacity to worry about it. He was like a dark storm bearing down on her, relentless, magnetic, all-consuming.

Rough callouses from his hands scratched against her cheeks as he guided her. Hard breaths spilled over her lips, and the wet slide of his tongue tasted like whiskey and desire and man. Her hands found the soft length of his hair, and her breasts pushed against the hard plane of his chest.

Then her lips were freed as his mouth slid over her skin—exploring her cheek, her jaw, her ear, her neck. He hiked her up to sit on the wide railing, the move surprising a gasp out of her, especially as he crowded the space between her legs, pushing himself closer, bringing his erection against the place between her legs craving friction, hardness, so much more of him. Maybe even all of him.

One strong arm wrapped around her back and held her steady, while the other hand stroked her hair, her face, her breast. The soft groans and breathy grunts spilling out of him were delicious and thrilling, and bolstered her confidence that she wasn’t the only one losing herself in this moment, in these touches. She almost couldn’t believe this was happening, and part of her was certain she must be dreaming. Because Haven Randall didn’t have beautiful things in her life. At least, never before.

The kiss was light. Yet Emma’s heart skipped a few beats. With her eyes still closed, she ran her tongue across her upper lip and let out a soft, involuntary “hmm.” Opening her eyes, she saw Josh’s smile.

“Shall we get ready to go?” he asked, with laughter dancing in his eyes.

They let the dogs play while they carried Emma’s canoe down to the dock and loaded it with their provisions. Well behaved or not, three dogs in one canoe with the two of them would have been a recipe for disaster, so they coaxed the dogs back in the cottage.

They put on life vests and, once on the water, they paddled leisurely around the lake. The colors of the trees edging the shoreline were a kaleidoscope of reds, ochers and oranges. They were reflected in mirrorlike perfection on the still surface of the water, until distorted by the ripples from the canoe.

Emma pulled out her oar and rested it across the hull. She motioned silently to Josh toward the shore. They floated without sound and watched a young white-tailed buck grazing on a sun-speckled, grassy patch by a small inlet. When he scented them, his head snapped up and his body tensed, but he remained motionless yet alert for any discernible threat. As the canoe floated closer, the buck turned abruptly, and with a flash of his snow-white tail, bounded off into the woods.

Emma was grinning as she twisted on her seat to look back at Josh. “Wasn’t he beautiful?” There was an expression on Josh’s face she couldn’t read. It made her feel breathless, wanting to gulp air.

“Yes. Very beautiful,” he murmured.

They resumed paddling and soon could hear the rush of water over rocks. The melodious sound became more distinct as they neared a curve in the shoreline. They navigated around an outcropping of rock, and caught sight of a fast-running stream plummeting over boulders into the lake. Emma signaled to a flat, grassy patch of shore close by and they paddled toward it. After beaching the canoe, they pulled it securely up on the grass and stowed their vests.

They made their way into the forest, following a trail that meandered along the edge of the stream, a crisp, colorful carpet of leaves crunching underfoot. Where the path was wide, they walked side by side. Where it narrowed, they hiked single file with Emma taking the lead. Occasionally, they heard the scurrying of a small animal in the underbrush or the cry of a bird overhead.

The musty scent of wet moss and waterlogged wood blended with the spicy fragrance of wildflowers.

The sound of water rushing over rock crescendoed as they approached a sapphire-blue pool with a low waterfall plunging into it. The pool was edged with a profusion of tall grasses, butterfly weed and mountain phlox. The grassy area around the pond was soft as a pillow beneath their feet. Drops of water that clung to blades of grass sparkled like diamonds in the sunshine.

Delighted, Emma turned to Josh. Lowering his backpack to the ground, he gathered her into his arms for a kiss, while a whip-poor-will serenaded them.

“I never would have guessed your brother would spend a small fortune on a ring for a woman he never met.” She edged out of his grip. “I thought he was a romantic, not completely certifiable.”

Quinn’s smile faded. “I assure you, Cameron is neither.” He set the ring on the steamer trunk beside her. “I’ll let you decide whether or not to wear it in the morning. And in the meantime, I’d better let you get some rest.”

He rose to his feet, leaving a priceless piece of jewelry balanced on last month’s Vogue.

“Quinn.” She stood to follow him to the door then reached back to grab the ring so she could return it. “Please. I don’t feel right keeping this here.”

He turned to face her as he reached the door, but made no move to take the glittering ring.

“If you were my bride-to-be, I would spare no expense to show the world you were mine.” His blue eyes glowed with a warmth that had her remembering his kiss. Her breath caught in her chest and she wondered what it might be like for him to call her that for real.

Mine.

“I’m—” At a total loss for words. “That is—” She folded the diamond into her hand, squeezing it tightly so the stones pressed into her soft skin, distracting her from her hypnotic awareness of this man. “If you insist.”

“It’s a matter of believability, Sofia.”

“It’s only for one month.” She wasn’t sure if she said it to remind him or herself.

“We’ll work out the details tomorrow.” He reached to smooth a strand of hair from her forehead, barely touching her and still sending shimmers of pleasure along her temple and all the way down the back of her neck. “Sleep well.”

She didn’t even manage to get her voice working before he was out the door again, leaving her alone in a suddenly too empty apartment.

Squeezing the ring tighter in her fist, she waited for the pinch of pain from the sharp edges of the stones. She needed to remember that this wasn’t real. Quinn McNeill had only agreed to this mad scheme to clean up his brother’s mess. Any hint of attraction she felt needed to be squashed immediately, especially since Quinn was cut from the same mold as her father—focused on business and the accumulation of wealth. Her world was about art, emotions and human connections.

Her mother had taught her that people did not fall into both camps. In Sofia’s experience it was true. Another great book revolving around volunteers at the Lemonade Stand women’s shelter in Santa Raquel. Many of you will recognize Kacey from her twin sister Lacey’s story a couple of books ago. It was great to get to see Lacey, Jem & Levi doing well! With this book, we have a story about two unlikely people to become the very best of friends … and how they adjust when the love they feel for their friend starts to turn into more. There are a couple of extra storylines at play as well that bring some emotional twists and turns to the plot.

Actress Kacey Hamilton enjoys her Hollywood lifestyle very much, but she also enjoys getting away from it all in her excursions to Santa Raquel to visit her twin sister and to volunteer at the women’s shelter there. She used to be the life of the party, but she decided she wanted to make some changes in her life and was lucky enough to find a friend that helped her hold herself accountable to sticking with her plan.
