A wounded soul and a loner … end up being a match made in heaven!  I just love Darcy Burke’s Ribbon Ridge novels and adding the Westcott’s into the mix with the Love On The Vine series is a lot of fun to read!

EXCERPT

All her feelings for him—hot and beautiful in her heart—dissolved on her tongue, strange, new and inexpressible.

He twined his fingers in hers, his thumb circling the center of her palm, slowly, and Dani disintegrated.

“Jack,” she said, voice tight.

He opened his eyes and peered at her strangely, then his eyes widened and sparked, as though he read in her eyes what was in her head, her heart, before he quickly glanced away.

Before she could think about it, she rose a little on her knees, reached for the back of his head and kissed him. He hesitated for just a moment, then shifted forward and kissed her back with a low groan that fired her blood.

His hands came up, firm around her waist, and he gathered her close against him so that she felt the rapid rise and fall of his chest, breathed in the musk of his skin. Mouth slanting against his, she lost herself in this moment. The scent and taste and feel of him. It was like tiny fireworks going off all over her, bits of her she’d thought dead reigniting.

He chased the world away. Evaporated time. Past, present, future—gone, so that none of it mattered, nothing should matter, but them, holding each other this way. For once, the muffled ringing that’d filled her ears since she left Oklahoma muted and she was free, adrift, awash with emotion that made her eyes tear and her heart swell.

He picked her up off the cold dirt and she fitted herself to him, his bulk and strength, the heat from his skin seeping through her shirt. Searing her. Setting her on fire. She kissed his face, his ears, his scar, especially his scar, her fingers in his soft dark hair. When he rained kisses down her neck, the world began to spin and she clutched his shoulders, sensation after sensation washing through her, nearly knocking her off her feet.

Fast paced and filled with intrigue!  We follow along and chase the clues with them right up until the end to figure out who all of the bad guys are.  This group of characters were fun to read about.

Meg Taylor is lucky to have an old friend that puts her in touch with someone who can help her when she needs it most.  She’s carrying a lot of secrets with her though, and eventually they are going to come back to bite her if she doesn’t soon trust Coop enough to let him help her.

Navy SEAL Cooper Johnson is home on leave after losing his sister.  He’s working around the family farm and just trying to heal and help his family get into a better place before he goes back to his job.  When he gets a call from a former teammate, he’s happy to step up and help keep Meg safe until they can find a better place for her to go.  He finds that having here there and spending time talking with her actually soothes his soul and helps him accept the loss of his sister.

When the secrets Meg has been hiding finally explode and put the entire family in danger, will they be able to find the proof they need to get everyone back to safety before it’s too late?

Such delicious warmth.

Meg slowly opened her eyes. She’d been back at the car, Sophie curled beside her, wondering how they would survive the storm and not freeze to death. The cold had pierced her bones like icy knives.

And then she’d closed her eyes, trying to keep her dog warm by holding Sophie tight. The nightmare had been too real. Sophie, kicked out of the house by her husband, wandering the streets during a south Florida cold snap. Curling up in a doorway to stay warm, whimpering and afraid, confused as to why her owners had abandoned her…

She drove, as she had in the past when it really happened, searching the streets for her beloved dog. But this time during the nightmare, a handsome stranger picked Sophie into his arms and scowled at Meg, as if blaming her for Sophie’s condition.

Now as she stirred, she became aware of lying in a warm bed, blankets piled atop her. A lamp glowed softly on a nightstand.

Meg realized she wore only panties and a bra.

And in addition to being half-naked, there was a hard male body next to her, also half-naked. Panic swept through her. She startled and moved away, but a strong, muscled arm hooked around her waist.

“Relax,” a deep male voice said. “You’re not going anywhere.”

The voice was strange, tinged with amusement and a New England accent. The body belonging to that accent was hardened with thick muscle, not soft with fat like Prescott’s. She became aware of the scent of him, all cedar and spicy aftershave, a pleasing masculine smell, not the fancy and expensive cologne disguising the vodka Prescott had consumed far too much lately.

“Get away from me,” she mumbled. “Why are you doing this?

“No one dies on my watch, Princess, and you were entering hypothermia. Body heat is the best way of keeping warm. I daresay your little dog knows this, otherwise she’d be nipping at my toes instead of snuggled beneath them.”

He added, with a wry sound, “And if you got frostbite, the local doc would have to amputate those pretty pink toes of yours.”

She had to get out of here, but oh, the warmth beneath the blankets and the firm, muscled body beside her gave off heat like a blast furnace.

Meg blinked hard, trying to summon precious energy. “Her name is Sophie.”

“Should have called her Ouchie.”

Meg’s mushy brain couldn’t register the joke, until she lifted her head and saw her rescuer hold up his hand where a half moon marked the skin. “Bit clean through my glove.”

“Oh no! I’m so sorry.” Mortified, she struggled to sit up, more concerned about her dog biting a total stranger who had saved them from death than her lack of clothing.

He pushed her down. “Easy now. You need to stay under these covers a while longer.”

“My dog…”

“No worries,” he said easily. “I trust she’s had her shots, and I’ve had mine, so you needn’t worry about your furball getting a disease.”

Meg realized he was joking. The tension gripping her sore, tight muscles eased a little. She peered upward to get a closer look at him. A thick shock of wavy dark brown hair was cropped short. He had an intense gaze, thin cheekbones and a wide mouth. Handsome, with a hint of Irish blood in those ice-blue eyes.

A dusting of black hair covered his muscled chest. Washboard abs rippled beneath smooth, tanned skin. He was mouthwatering, a prime example of masculinity. Meg stared, still struggling with the unreality that this man had rescued her from the cold and warmed her with his body.

“You’re Cooper Johnson?”

“The one and only,” he drawled. “Your host over the next several days.”

She pulled the blankets up to cover her breasts, well aware her lacy red bra provided thin covering in the chill, and her nipples had turned rigid.

From the cold. Not the pull of attraction toward this handsome stranger. It didn’t matter if her libido sat up and started shimmying.

All she had to do was think of what Prescott would do if he found her, and her heated blood turned to ice.

“Where’s Sophie?”

Cooper lifted the bottom of the blankets. Snuggled at his feet, wedged partly beneath the covers, her dog snoozed. Relief filled Meg. She tossed back the covers, climbed down the length of the bed and gathered her dog into her arms, checking her over anxiously.

“She seems okay.” Meg drew in a deep breath as the awakening Sophie licked her face.

Sheer male interest flared on Cooper’s face. He rearranged the blankets around his waist. Realizing he must have had a bull’s-eye glimpse of her rear end, Meg flushed. She clutched the dog just a little too tightly, and Sophie squirmed.

The interest faded as his expression shuttered. He scratched the bristles on his hard jaw. “You feeling okay now, Princess?”

At her nod, he flung back the blankets, displaying a pair of long, muscled legs. A dusting of hair didn’t hide a wicked-looking scar on his left thigh. Her fascinated gaze traveled upward to the black Jockeys he wore…

And the very large bulge beneath them showing a blatant male reaction.

Seems as if Cooper Johnson was equally attracted to her.

Not that she’d do anything about it. Not in her lifetime.

His mouth curved into a knowing smile as he reached down to the floor, retrieved a pair of jeans. Cooper slid into them and stood, buckling the belt.

“Had to get you warm. Can’t help the consequences. I’m a guy, and you’re a very attractive woman.”

He shoved a hand through his thick hair and the move flexed the biceps of his right arm. A tattoo of a snake writhed with the motion as well. Sailors got inked, from what she knew. And he was a Navy SEAL.

Not regular Army, like her brother had been.

SEALs were tough, Lacey had told her, but their missions and lives were shrouded in secrecy. She wondered what happened to him that he was here now with her.

“You do tempt me,” she whispered, her smile in place. “I didn’t realize it was mutual though.”

“Now you do.” And maybe she’d be more circum­spect.

“Because I’m convenient?” she asked. “Or some­what—” her expression pinched “—desperate?”

The uncertainty twisted his guts. He glanced at her mouth. “Because you’re hot.”

Her teeth bit into her bottom lip. “You really think so?”

Intuitively knowing she needed to hear it, he shared his thoughts. It wasn’t in the best interest of his sanity, but he liked seeing her blush.

He especially liked the way she looked at him.

“You’re the best, mister.” The kid had to get his smile from his mother, Diego decided. Because not once could Diego remember Ramsey’s smile making him want to offer one in return.

“Diego,” he said after a second, figuring talking was better than standing here on the sidewalk, grinning like an idiot. “You can call me Diego.”

Huh? Was that a question? The kid’s expression said it was, so Diego did a mental replay.

“I’m in security,” he said, using the cover Savino had decided on.

“Bet you’re good at it.” Grabbing the bike by the han­dles, the kid gave it a good shake, then grinned when the chain stayed in place. “You’re good at fixing things, too. Maybe you could teach me to fix some things?”

Diego didn’t have much experience with kids—hell, he didn’t have any experience. Despite that, he had to figure this one was something special.

Before he could answer him, a delivery truck rum­bled its way to a stop in front of the kid’s house. Some­thing he’d noticed was a regular occurrence. At least once, sometimes twice a day.

“You sure get a lot of deliveries,” he observed, watching a guy in shorts carry a stack of boxes toward the door.

“Yeah. Mom gets tons of stuff. She decorates for peo­ple’s houses. She orders pillows and bowls and things like that. Sometimes she gets material and things to help her decide colors.”

Convenient. Or it would be if Ramsey were run­ning drugs or stolen goods—that’d be a solid cover. But unless he’d shipped himself home in an ash can, it probably wasn’t pertinent. Lansky would claim oth­erwise, though, so Diego made a note to mention it in his next report.

He caught a flash of something out of the corner of his eye. All it took was a casual glance toward the house to send him rocking back on his heels.

Damn.

Not even signing for a slew of packages and fend­ing off the flirtations of the delivery guy were enough to keep Harper Maclean from sending her son a pro­tective frown.

So far his glimpses of her had been at a longer dis­tance than the twenty feet currently separating them. Her photos didn’t do her justice. He’d known she was a looker, but no way he’d have thought fully dressed in person could trump that bikini shot, even if that bikini shot had been kind of blurry.

He’d have been wrong.

With Book 3 in the Family Secrets series, we finally get to hear Natasha’s story.  We’ve seen her producing the show and wondered what made her tick, and now we find out!  It was a bit slower moving than the previous books in the series, but still an enjoyable cast of characters.

Let down by one city-gal already, Spencer Longfellow isn’t happy about allowing another one onto his ranch, but money is money and he’s looking forward to getting some put away to solidify his children’s future by agreeing to this production.

Natasha Stevens is producing an off-site portion of her reality cooking show competition and what better place to do it than on a ranch that produces a great source of beef that they can educate the audience about?  She’s not expecting to be drawn to the single father and his adorable kids.  She doesn’t do relationships or roots.

When a secret comes to light and the future is unsure, Natasha will be the one to step forward and offer help in the situation … and in doing so, will realize that she has been wrong all these years!

A sexy, fun little novella centering around one of Riley O’Brien & Co.’s management trainees!

Kyla Andrews is almost done with her year long management trainee program and is excited to pick her new job with the company.  She’s hoping she makes it that long without totally embarrassing herself with how much she’s crushing on her boss though!

Jake Lilliard has been suffering right alongside her for almost 6 months now, even though neither of them knows that the other one likes them.  Jake is counting the days until she’s no longer his subordinate and he can ask her out!  He’s never felt this way about a woman before!

Just when their time has arrived, a moment of sharing their past with each other brings about a stumbling block that just might tear them apart for good!

 

EXCERPT:

Metal wall sconces illuminated the corridor, throwing pools of golden light on the dark wood plank floors. A door opened a few feet ahead of her, and Jake emerged from it. He froze when he saw her, his eyes widening before he ambled toward her.

The narrow corridor made her even more aware of his height and muscular physique, and her body reacted the way it always did when got close. Her heart began to pound, and her breathing grew shallow. Suddenly, her throat was dry, and she swallowed thickly.

Stopping right in front of her, he looked down into her face. His eyes caught the light from the sconces, glimmering with a million shades of green and gold. They dropped to her mouth before jumping back to hers.

“You’ve got sugar on your lips,” he notified her, his voice low and gravelly.

Without thinking, she licked her upper lip. He moved closer, the front of his long-sleeved dress shirt brushing against her chest. She nervously stepped back, afraid that she might throw herself at him. He followed until her back was against the wall. She sucked in a shaky breath, trying not to let him see how much his nearness affected her.

“Not there.” He touched his thumb to her lower lip, toward the corner. “Here.”

Dropping his head, he licked the spot where his thumb had been. She gasped, certain that she was having yet another X-rated dream starring Jake. When his tongue flicked along the outer edge of her upper lip, she realized it wasn’t a dream.

“And you’ve got some here,” he murmured, tracing her lower lip with his tongue.

She gripped his upper arms, his biceps rock hard under her fingers. “What are you doing?” she breathed against his mouth.

He drew back to stare into her eyes. “I’m not your boss anymore, Kyla. I’m just a guy who works for the same company you do, and lucky for me, that company doesn’t have any rules against co-workers dating, even if they’re in the same department.”

She barely heard a word he said because her ears were roaring with her pulse. “What?”

He smiled slowly, and she couldn’t tear her eyes from his mouth. She clutched his arms tighter, wanting those lips on every part of her body.

“I’m not your boss anymore,” he repeated. “I have been counting the days until … until I could …”

“Until you could what?” she whispered.

“Until I could be with you,” he answered hoarsely. “That’s all I want … a chance to be with you.”

Such an emotionally powerful book!  Choosing to let fear guide you, often leaves you losing out on the best things in life.  Really enjoyed this couple and the story!  It was fun to see Jake and Kyla again too!

Garrett Gale had one magically night with the woman of his dreams … and then she disappeared, never responding to any of his attempts at contacting her.  He moved on with his life and tried to forget about her … but his heart remembered.  Imagine his surprise when he runs into her out of the blue years later!  He can’t believe the changes in her, but he doesn’t desire her one bit less.

Phoebe Werner relocated to San Francisco to start living again.  She’s finally healthy, and enjoying delving into the Management Trainee Program she’s working in at Riley O’Brien & Co.  When she runs into Garrett at a News Year’s Eve party, she can’t believe it’s him.  He’s all she’s ever wanted … but exactly what she can’t have!

 

EXCERPT:

Garrett picked up his fork, but instead of eating off his own plate, he stabbed a piece of chicken off hers. As he brought it to his mouth, she kicked him under the table, not hard, just a tap.

“If you wanted chicken tagine,” she groused, “you should have ordered it.”

Although his mouth was busy chewing, she could tell he wanted to smile. This was their old routine—him eating off her plate, her chastising him, and him offering little tidbits of his meal to repay her.

Switching his fork for a spoon, he scooped some stew from the orange bowl in front of him and held it up to her mouth. She opened with no hesitation, the whole situation as comfortable and familiar as her favorite flannel nightgown.

He spooned the food into her mouth. As she chewed the flavorful combination of tender beef, kalamata olives, raisins, and garbanzo beans, she got hints of cinnamon and cumin and a little kick of lemon.

“Oh, that’s good,” she murmured, licking her lips. “Give me another bite.”

He didn’t give her what she wanted. Instead, his eyes dropped to her mouth and stayed there for several heartbeats. She watched as his pupils expanded and his irises darkened from bright turquoise to deep teal.

She had seen that look in his eyes before, but she hadn’t recognized it for what it was. She did now.

Suddenly the situation was no longer comfortable. And neither was the ache between her thighs. Feeling a syrupy trickle of arousal into her panties, she silently cursed herself and shifted on the banquette seat.

She’d known it would be impossible for them to go back to the way things used to be. They had opened Pandora’s Box that night. Or, to be more accurate, they had opened Phoebe’s box.

They’d released a powerful force into their friendship—desire. And that desire simmered beneath the surface like a dormant volcano just waiting to erupt.
