“I’ll get straight to the point.” He opened a drawer in his desk, withdrew a folder and placed it in front of him. “Since their marriage, I’ve been Sean Dodd and Delilah Kennedy Dodd’s lawyer. I am also executor of their will. Following their tragic deaths, it now falls to me to ensure that their estate is disposed of according to their wishes.” He withdrew a single sheet of paper from the folder. “The will is very straightforward. There is one beneficiary who will inherit all property and investments.”

“If that’s the case, why are the two of us here?” Even if she hadn’t known him as well as she knew herself, Everett’s body language would have been easy to interpret—arms folded across his muscular chest, jaw clenched, one foot tapping out a restless beat.

“My clients wrote this will just over four years ago, not long after their marriage.” Raymond scanned the sheet of paper as he spoke.

Four years. Alyssa looked at Everett, wondering if the significance of the time frame had registered with him.

Clearly it had. “That was around the time Georgia Dodd, Sean’s younger sister, left my brother, Casey, at the altar.” His voice was tight with remembered anger. “Sean masterminded the incident because he thought that a deputy sheriff wasn’t good enough for his kid sister. Or possibly he didn’t want a law-enforcement officer in the family taking a closer look at what he was getting up to. The reason doesn’t matter. It was the end of our friendship.”

He flicked a look Alyssa’s way to let her know he hadn’t forgotten the rest. Soon after that incident, but for unrelated reasons, they had broken up.

“I’m assuming that Georgia, whom I recently had the pleasure of arresting at gunpoint, is the beneficiary.” Alyssa jumped slightly atEverett’s words. It wasn’t just the fact that he’d been involved in apprehending Georgia. They were a stark reminder of the dangers he faced every day.

“Although Georgia was released on bail, she broke the terms of her bail by attempting to leave town. She’s now back behind bars but that won’t affect her inheritance. So can we cut to the part where you tell us what our role is? Did Sean name us as trustees four years ago and forget to change it?”

“Georgia Dodd is not named in her brother’s will. The circumstances are…unusual. There is a section in the document that involves the two of you. Twelve months ago, Sean and Delilah came to see me to check it was still legal.” Raymond dabbed at his upper lip with his handkerchief. “This will be easier to explain if I invite my other guests to join us.” He pressed a button on his desktop phone.

“Other guests?” Alyssa looked around as the door opened and a middle-aged woman entered the room. She leaned to one side under the weight of a large bag shaped like a pink elephant; in her other arm, she carried a sleeping baby.

“This is Patty Griffiths of the Arizona Department of Child Safety.” Raymond indicated the child. “Kennedy is Sean and Delilah’s six-month-old daughter, and she has been left in your joint custody.”

Joy shoved the phone in her purse and saw the Uber driver at the bottom of the escalator, holding a sign with her name on it.

She walked up to him. “Hi! I’m Joy Boston.”

The middle-aged man nodded. “I’m Roy. Happy to see you. I’ll take your bags for you. Do you have more luggage to claim?”

“No, this is it. I won’t be staying long.”

“Oh, that’s a pity,” Roy said, as he politely ushered her toward the outer door.

“Why’s that?”

“Indian Lake is so lovely at the holidays. So many decorations and activities. The Christmas Concert. The symphony. The children’s Christmas pageant. The caroling parties. The Candlelight Tour…”

They walked outside to the cold. “They still have all that?”

“Of course. I take my grandson to the Christmas parade every year, and then we mail his letter to Santa at the Elf Mail Station.” They walked to Roy’s black SUV, and he put her bags in the back as she got in the back seat.

As much as Joy had struggled to make a new life for herself in New York, with new friends and new holiday traditions, the old days and the old ways of celebrating flooded her.

Just thinking about Indian Lake released anger she hadn’t felt in years. Anger toward the townspeople for their apathy—laziness that directly caused her parents’ car accident. She hadn’t been able to forgive them then or now. The pain of her long-ago scars resonated in her. She would go to town, do her duty, find a buyer for the greenhouse and leave as quickly as possible.

She forced her mind to redirect to happier times.

She remembered her mother and father working alongside her, tending the poinsettias. The week before Thanksgiving, enormous delivery trucks would roll into the parking lot and they’d unload red, pink and white beauties. Just thinking about those gorgeous tropical flowers caused Joy to wish for faraway adventures, sandy beaches and palm trees, places she’d planned to explore with…

“Adam.”

She sat up straight.

Adam hadn’t crossed her mind once since she’d got the news of her grandfather’s death. But there he was. She remembered his wide shoulders, his thick raven hair and how he’d forget to cut it, so it would hang down, nearly covering half his face as he worked furiously on yet another machine that never reached “functionality.”

She’d known Adam was smart and was convinced he hadn’t yet found his groove. She’d urged him on, believing his genius would pay off one day. The time when he’d lost the state science fair championship, he’d been despondent and distant, but Joy had kissed away his tears and forced him to envision a golden future filled with success. He said he believed her.

They’d had a romantic senior year together, stealing kisses in the greenhouses. Learning how to cross-pollinate and hybridize poinsettias from her grandfather. Going to summer concerts in the park and dancing at the beach under the stars—with Adam humming a song to her. He’d given her a gold promise ring and told her he wished he was rich enough for a diamond. At the time, she hadn’t cared.

I loved him.

Those days with Adam had been the most romantic of her life. Idyllic days—until her parents died.

She looked out the window at the nude maple trees along the interstate. The ground was barren of flowers; the grass was frozen. The sky was the same depressing slate-gray, promising snow flurries or rain.

She felt gray inside without her grandfather, just as she had after her parents’ deaths. Grief’s fingerprint was a deep one. She wondered if she’d ever feel sunny again.

She looked down at her gloved hands and remembered a winter day once when she’d forgotten her gloves and Adam had walked her to the greenhouses after school. He’d taken both her hands in his, rubbed them until they were pink and warm again, and then he’d given her his too-big gloves to wear. He’d pulled her close as the wind whipped around them.

“I’ll always keep you warm,” he’d said.

“Ditto,” she’d replied.

“In fact, I’d like to be the one who discovers cheap energy to keep all the world warm. No one should go cold,” he’d said.

“That’s what you want to do? Save the world from freezing?”

“It’s a tall order, but it’s what I want to do,” he’d said and kissed the end of her very cold nose.

“Now, that was very warming,” Joy had replied.

The characters are well developed and the story line was quick to catch this reader’s attention.

Dash is electrifying. We learn from the start that he has done bad things, but he comes across as an overall good guy, and when he sets out to clear the former club’s name during a murder investigation, we see a loyal side to him.

Bryce comes on strong at first as she decrees she will find out what truly happened to disband this club. It doesn’t take long after she interacts with Dash for her to change her tune a bit. He’s easy on the eyes and want it or not, she’s soon under his spell.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a bit of suspense with their romance. It’s a former MC, so there’s not a lot of action on that front going on, but some of the members are still around and jump in to help when needed. We are left in a bit of a cliffhanger on the mystery we tried to solve throughout this story, but the happily ever after of the couple isn’t up in the air.I’m looking forward to the next book in the series and hope to get all of the answers of what happened then!

I recommend this story to anyone wanting a drama filled love story with lots of unexpected twists and turns. There is a bit of confusion weaved in as the story is told, but overall it was awe inspiring and emotional. I am enjoying this entire series.

She walked over to a table where three guys had just finished their beers and grabbed their empty bottles. “Refills?”

“Yeah, thanks,” one of the guys said.

She walked away with the human inferno that was Jace Stone on her heels.

“Dixie, how can you be upset with me? I gave you a twenty-thousand-dollar donation for the auction.”

She set the bottles on the bar and said, “Which I truly appreciate, but giving of yourself and giving money are two different things. One is easy and mindless. The other tells me who you are. It was a real eye-opener.” She crossed her arms and said, “What did you need help with anyway?”

Diesel grabbed the empty bottles, and Dixie said, “Another round, please.”

“I’m rolling out the Legacy line in the fall.”

“So I’ve heard. Bear’s pretty excited.” In addition to working at Whiskey Automotive, Bear worked part-time designing and building custom motorcycles for Jace’s company. He hadn’t worked on the Legacy line, but he raved about it.

“We all are. This line is my baby. I’ve put blood, sweat, and tears into it. It’s the first motorcycle line that will have bikes designed specifically for women. Nobody’s doing that, Dix. This is a huge deal.”

Bear had told her all about Jace’s innovative, sleek designs for women. It was a genius idea, and it didn’t surprise her that Jace had come up with it. But she couldn’t help thinking about Jace researching the contours of women’s bodies…

Diesel put three bottles on the bar, eyes locked on Jace. “Stone,” he said evenly.

“Diesel.” Jace lifted his chin in the manly greeting Dixie was accustomed to.

“Thanks, Diesel,” Dixie said, and as she headed to the table with Jace beside her, she said, “Congratulations on the line, but what does it have to do with needing me?” She set the bottles down, flashed a smile at the customers, and said, “Can I get you boys anything else?”

One of them looked her up and down lasciviously. Jace stepped closer, and the guy shifted his eyes away and said, “No. We’re good.”

Dixie spun on her heels, grabbed Jace’s arm, and dragged him to the side of the room. She felt Diesel’s antennae springing and glanced at the bar, mouthing, I’m fine! Turning her attention to Jace, she spoke in a harsh whisper. “You just fucked up my tip, and I don’t appreciate it. So whatever you have to say, say it and be gone, okay? I’ve got work to do.”

“That guy was looking at you like you were a piece of meat.”

“No shit. They all do.” Except now that she was thinking about it, Jace never had. Not once. In fact, in all the years she’d known him, this was the longest he’d ever looked at her. He didn’t live in Peaceful Harbor, but he traveled there often to see his brother Jared, who had signed up for the auction. Jared owned a restaurant in Pleasant Hill and lived there for several months out of the year. “I have a lot to do, Jace, so if you have more to say, please get on with it.”

“I’m launching a women’s clothing line called Leather and Lace when we launch the Legacy line. We’re making a calendar to promote the clothing and the new bikes. The photo shoot is next week, and the woman I hired to model got hurt and can’t make it. I want you to replace her.”

She blinked several times, unable to believe what she was hearing. An incredulous laugh tumbled out. “Do you even fucking know me, Stone? I am not a pinup girl!” She took a step away and he grabbed her arm, tugging her back to him and keeping her so close, she could see flecks of gold in his sexy hazel eyes.

“This is important to me, Dixie. I don’t want someone who fakes being a biker. I want an authentic woman. I want you.”

“Do I need to point out that I was your second choice, or maybe your tenth. I don’t know or care, because any way you cut it, the answer is no. I told you, I’m not a pinup girl.” She held his steady gaze with an ice-cold one of her own and said, “For the record, Whiskeys don’t play second fiddle to anyone. Sorry, Stone, but you’re out of luck.”

“Come on, Dixie,” he pleaded gruffly. “I’ll let you auction me off.”

“Too little, too late. The ballot is full.” The lie felt victorious. She yanked her arm free and said, “I have customers to help. Good luck with the line. I’m sure, like everything you touch, it will turn to gold.”

“With you on board, it’ll be legendary.”

“No.”

He leaned closer and lowered his voice to say, “This isn’t over, kitten.”

“What the hell did you just say?” Anger simmered inside her. She poked him in his rock-hard chest and said, “I’m nobody’s kitten, and you’re this close to earning a knee to your groin.”

“You definitely know how to use those claws, and you’re so sweet I bet you purr,” he said arrogantly. “You know you want to do it, Dix.”

His eyes drilled into her, causing heat to sear through her veins and her traitorous nipples to pebble into aching peaks. Damn, he played dirty.

“Careful, Stone. This kitten bites.”
