Mathias walked barefoot across his patio. It was still early and a light mist clung to the ground—no doubt the result of early morning watering, but he preferred a more romantic explanation. It was the artist in him.

He took his favorite chair, set his coffee and sketch pad on the table beside him, then prepared to wait.

He wasn’t sure how long ago the ritual had started. Shortly after Millie had arrived, maybe. He didn’t know why she got to him more than the others. She was just a giraffe. Shouldn’t he find beauty in the swift-footed gazelles or majesty in the water buffalo?

While he’d been aware of the animals when he’d purchased the house, he hadn’t really noticed them for the first few months. He supposed they’d crept into his consciousness after he’d met Carol.

Most towns hid their dumps behind gates or far away from any suburban sprawl. Happily Inc had planned differently, putting it just southwest of the population center, carefully downwind.

In addition to running a recycling and reclamation program that was one of the best in the nation, the two men who owned and ran the dump had also purchased hundreds of acres around the landfill. Grasses and trees had been brought in. Once they’d taken root, the animals had appeared. The gazelles had been first, then the zebras. There were a few wading birds, the water buffalo and lastly, Millie.

Mathias knew the basics—the two men who had created a unique African savanna on the edge of the California desert were Carol’s father and uncle. When she’d completed her degree, she’d come to work at the preserve. A year ago, the old man in charge of the animals had retired, leaving Carol to take over. A few months after that, Millie had arrived.

Mathias didn’t know why the giraffe and the woman were so closely linked in his mind, but they were. Now, as he watched the morning fog slowly dissipate, he saw Millie stroll into view.

She was a reticulated or Somali giraffe, nearly fifteen feet tall, with traditional markings. Her face was almost heart shaped, with widely spaced eyes and an inquisitive gaze.

Mathias sipped his coffee before reaching for his sketch pad. He already had hundreds of drawings of Millie and Carol, but he hadn’t yet found the one. He would know it when he saw it, so every morning he waited.

Carol appeared when they cleared the trees. She barely came to partway up Millie’s shoulder. In the morning light, her short red hair seemed almost blond. She was strong and wholly herself—a contrast to his usual type of woman, so he shouldn’t have found her appealing…only he did. There was something about her lack of artifice, something about the way she was so comfortable in her own skin that made him pay attention.

He lives life in the fast lane, always giving hockey his all and always trying to keep up with his big brother Ben’s accomplishments. He doesn’t want to think of the future after hockey is over, he just wants to keep his head down and bust through every game. Emma is at a point where she wants more … but she hasn’t spoken up about it … yet! This series is always a great read … I liked them as a cute couple, but I didn’t connect with them quite as much as previous books because they sort of kept themselves closed off even from each other in what they were thinking and feeling. Hoping there are more books coming in this series!

Asher Westmore lives and breathes hockey. He’s on the verge of hitting a major career milestone with his New Jersey Devils team, and he’s not going to let the aching knee that he’s been ignoring for a year now get in his way. When his big brother and opponent brings a hard hit during the next to last game prior, it takes him out of the game and to the hospital … with months of recovery on the table.

His best friend (with benefits!) Emma Callaway just so happens to live in his hometown and be a physical therapist, so he’s looking forward to having her get him back on his skates quicker than the doctors are advising. Emma is on the cusp of changing up her life a bit herself, and she’s happy to have some time with Ash to try to figure out where they are going in life … she knows she’s loved him for years and wants a future … but she doesn’t know if it’s still just friendship and sex for him.

Juliet on the other-hand, I would have liked to have smacked a few times. 🙂 I enjoyed them together, but I wanted her to appreciate what was in front of her eyes more.  Loved the book!!

Sydney Smoke Rugby player Ryder Davis is living the life. He had to leave his beloved family farm in the outback to do it, but he’s loving living on the beach and playing the best rugby of his life with his bunch of rowdy pals! What he’s not ready for is having a huge dog with a mind of his own thrust upon him … he needs help, fast!

Juliet Morgan happens to be at the desk of his local animal rescue when he pops in to see if they have any tips on how he can stop this dog from tearing his house apart one room at a time. She’s gorgeous and returns his sexy flirting with welcoming smiles and promises of a good time twinkling in her eyes. She’s not out for anything but a good time right now because no relationship is going to hold her back from living her dream when she moves to Italy in a couple of months!

She’s none too pleased to have even the thought of the cartel stirred up again when Bennet comes calling, but once she realizes he can help her get justice for her mother’s murder, she decides it might be worth her while to attempt to work with him. When danger comes knocking and her only safe haven is smack dab in the middle of Bennet’s elitist family, she’s not so sure how she’s going to handle this!

He was a sweetheart … and he really hung in there trying to secretly love her through getting over her hang-ups in life. Really enjoyed their story and will look forward to more in the series!

SLEEPWALKING WITH DANGER

Sleepwalking has gotten Olive Belmont into some sticky situations. Being the witness to both murders may have put her on the killer’s list. Even so, she doesn’t think the killer is Jack and is willing to help him. But will putting his past to rest ease her mind or leave her with even greater nightmares?

 

A classic who-done-it! With multiple people acting suspiciously, we’re on the hunt for the true culprit from beginning to end. There’s not a huge amount of romance to the story, but the characters are really easy to connect with, and I enjoyed them both from the start. With a lot of subterfuge, it’s a fun read as we go back and forth trying to figure out who is looking more guilty than the next!

Security expert Jack King left his hometown of Pine Lake, Texas behind 15 years ago, but the trauma and loss he experienced before he left continues to haunt him to this day. His high school girlfriend was murdered … a beautiful, fun-loving spirit who deserved a warm and fulfilling life … and the whole town thought he did it!

Recent events have brought Jack back to town to figure out what’s really going on in Pine Lake. He’s received calls from his so-called former best friends, both shining light on the other’s actions and possible deception. Just after arriving, he runs across Olive Belmont in a very dangerous situation. He puts himself out there to help her, and as new things come to light it appears her sleepwalking habit might have had her subconsciously witnessing two murders!

Spence drew in a deep, shuddering breath that wasn’t much steadier than hers and pulled off his now crooked glasses. “Hang on a second.” He tossed them aside. “I need to check on something.”

“What?” she asked warily.

Once again he slowly drew her in, his eyes heated and focused on hers, infusing her with some of his calm. “I want to see if this is how it’s going to be.”

“How what’s going to be?” she whispered.

“This.”

His kiss started out just as slow and thoughtful as the first, all careful control. But when his tongue touched hers, control flew straight out the window.

She’s been through hard times herself and is just now coming back out into the world to enjoy it after beating cancer … and as bittersweet as it is to be around his sons knowing she can’t have children of her own, she begins to adore them as soon as she has her first meeting!
