A little different of writing style than I typically read, but I really enjoyed it!  Cali and Red had a chemistry that made you want more.  More sex, more cuddles, more laughter, more talking, etc.  Just more of “them”.  A sexy read with lessons in being a survivor no matter what life throws at you.

Calisa Harper is one tough cookie.  She takes what she wants and doesn’t take any slack for it.  What she wants right now is Jared Williams.

Red’s twin sister, Sydney, is Cali’s best friend.  They’ve known each other for years and were great friends first, and for a few years now have added benefits to their friendship.  They keep it on the down low, and always say “no strings”.  But Red’s life changed when he found out that he fathered a little girl with an ex.  He’s trying to find out where she is, and knowing that he’s a Dad has changed his outlook on life.  He wants a happily ever after … but Cali is still running scared from her past.

Will Red be able to convince Cali that she can have a happy ending?  And will finding his daughter help them, or end them?

Author Info

As a little girl, I loved to be holed up in my room creating stories with my Barbie Dolls. There was no subject I didn’t tackle. It was always my dream to write a soap opera. As I grew older, I assumed that dream was just that… a dream.

Born and raised in Southeast Michigan, near Ann Arbor, my mother always instilled in me the importance of reading. There was never a time when I wasn’t going to read, in the process of reading, or just finished reading a book. It was also my mother who, later on in my life, gave me my first romance novel: Indigo by Beverly Jenkins. From that moment on, I became a fan of Ms. Jenkins for life and a lover of all things romance.

I’m living my dream now.

“Why don’t you get rid of the stiff and come up to my room?”

Tempted as she was, Cali wasn’t going out like that. “No,” she breathed, suddenly feeling very…hot. “I have a date.”

Slowly, Jared edged closer to her. She retreated until the hard doorknob dug into her back. Reaching behind her, he flipped the lock on the door, the click echoing in the empty bathroom. Sucking in a deep breath, she waited, anticipating his next move.

His fingers flitted across the hem of her dress and he inched it up a bit. Kneeling down, he slipped his hands under her dress and slowly pulled down her underwear. She held her breath, wondered what he would do next.

“Step out of them,” he ordered in a low, deep voice.

Bracing her hands on his shoulders, she stepped out of her lace panties. With a smirk, he stood up, tucked the thin material into the inside pocket of his suit jacket, and pulled out a tiny key card. He placed it in her hand and closed her fingers around it. “Room 1179,” he murmured, his lips a mere inch away from hers. Closing her eyes, she took in the smell of cognac on his breath and leaned closer.

His soft laugh brought her mind back to their location and she opened her eyes. She opened her mouth to speak, but he placed a finger over her lips.

“Shh. Try not to think about what I’m going to do to you, while you’re on your date.” Swinging open the door, he walked out, whistling.

She hated him—in the best way.

BOOK REVIEW – Second Chance Christmas – Ellen Butler

3 1/2 STARS!

This book had a good premise, but I felt like it moved along too fast.  It was a short novella length type, and I think would have been much more enjoyable had it been a full length which would have given room to explore their past, and redevelop their relationship deeper.

Emma Taylor is a prominent DC attorney, and is surprised to be called in the middle of the night to pick up her ex-fiance from the Emergency Room after a bar fight.

Major Colton Evans has just gotten out of Walter Reed hospital after being flown home after he was injured overseas.  He’s trying to decide what to do with the rest of his life, and is surprised to see his biggest mistake waiting for him when he gets out of the ER.

Colton regrets letting Emma walk out of his life and end their engagement a few years ago.  Will he be able to convince her to give him another shot?

BOOK REVIEW – Fire on Ice: The Complete Series – Dakota Madison

Okay, I went into reading this book fairly blind … I liked the guys chest on the cover (hey, I’m honest!), and I liked that it was about a hockey player, but have never read this author, or heard any reviews  —  I so loved it!  I adored Kian from the first page, and Taylor just seemed like such a fit for him that you just had to hope that from the first time he laid eyes on her, that she would give him a chance.  I wish there were a couple more books for me to run out and buy to enjoy more of them.

Kian Kavanagh walks into a bar … no really, he does! … and a short time later, meets the woman of his dreams.  Just their first eye contact across the room knocks him for a loop.

Taylor Thompson is there with a friend just conducting an experiment for her psychology class, she never expects to meet a guy.  And what a guy he is.  Kian plays minor league hockey, and that’s actually a negative immediately in Taylor’s eyes because she’s been hurt by a jock in the past, and swore to never date one again.

Kian convinces her to take his number, and is shocked when she actually calls him.  They casually see each other a few times, and it doesn’t take long for them to realize that they are a great fit.  They are enjoying life when Kian gets called up to the majors and has to move to Seattle.  When Taylor suffers a horrific trauma, will she be able to come back from it? And will Kian be able to be there for her when he’s not even in the state?

Loved this book!  It’s well written, and the main characters get into your heart immediately and have you pulling for them to get together.  I hadn’t read any of the previous ones about the family, but this will not be my only!  Can’t wait to go back and read the previous siblings stories and will look forward to hopefully seeing more of Alaina and Evan in future family members stories.

Movie star Alaina Pierce is looking for a way out of Hollywood as a media circus is starting up around her.  Her production partner Sean suggests his in-laws place in Ribbon Ridge, Oregon, so she packs up and heads out.

Evan Archer has just moved back home to live with his parents and is the first to run into Alaina at the apartment over his parents garage when he goes to help he hears the piercing alarm of the smoke detector going off and goes to help her get it to turn off.
Evan is a breath of fresh air to Alaina after living in fake Hollywood for so many years.  He doesn’t seem to have a filter, and everything that comes out of his mouth is honest.  A what you see is what you get kind of guy.  After a few interactions with him and his family, she’s told that he has Aspergers.
They spend as much time enjoying each others company as they can while she’s there, and neither is looking forward to her going home to California.  When they lead such different lives and want different things for their futures, can there be anything beyond the here and now for them?

Ribbon Ridge #4
Darcy Burke
Releasing November 17th, 2015
Avon Books

Evan Archer has always preferred peace and solitude to the loud antics of his large, hard-to-navigate family. But when Archer Enterprises needs a new creative director, Evan jumps at the chance to claim the job he’s always wanted. Moving home is easier than he expected, but Evan isn’t prepared for the stunning A-list celebrity hiding out in his family’s garage apartment.

Following a major tabloid scandal, movie star Alaina Pierce escapes to Ribbon Ridge. She’s immediately drawn to the quiet, picturesque town and the incredibly sexy—if a little quirky—Evan. He may be built like a Greek god, but he’s honest and straightforward… so different from the Hollywood types she normally dates.

Their attraction is undeniable, but Alaina can’t elude the paparazzi forever, and Evan has no interest in being in the limelight. When the secret she’s been keeping is exposed, the idea of Evan—of real love and a family like the Archers—could vanish in an instant.

Evan Archer rounded the larger of his parents’ two garages and was immediately hit by the smell of smoke and the peal of an alarm. He instinctively pressed his hands to his ears and looked up at the apartment on the second floor of the garage. Smoke billowed from an open window. Despite the excruciating sound, he ran toward the door, threw it open, and vaulted up the stairs. The door at the top, which led to the apartment, was open. The acrid scent of smoke assaulted his lungs as the scream of the alarm violated his ears.

A woman stood beneath the alarm madly waving a towel.

Evan strode to the dining table situated in front of the windows and pulled a chair beneath the smoke detector. He said nothing to the strange woman, but nevertheless she moved out of his way. He stepped onto the chair and promptly pulled the battery from the alarm. Blessed silence reigned. He closed his eyes with relief.

“Thank you,” she said, draping the towel over her shoulder. “I am so sorry about this. Who are you?”

He didn’t look directly at her but recognized her immediately. “You’re Alaina Pierce.”

“I know who I am. Who are you?” There was a guarded, tentative look in her eyes. He universally sucked at decoding emotional expression, but that was one he knew. Probably because he’d seen it in the mirror so much when he’d been younger.

He jumped down off the wooden chair and returned it to the table. “I’m Evan Archer. Are you staying here?”

“Yes. Sean didn’t tell you?”

“Nope.” Evan hadn’t seen his brother-in-law today, but that wasn’t unusual. He and Evan’s sister Tori lived in a condo in Ribbon Ridge proper, while Evan lived fifteen minutes outside the center of town with their parents in the house they’d all grown up in. “Should he have?”

“Maybe not. My being here is a secret.”

Then it made perfect sense that he hadn’t told Evan. He was terrible at keeping secrets. “I suck at secrets.” And knowing when to keep his mouth shut.

“I see. Well, do you think you could keep me a secret?”

Maybe. If he didn’t make the mistake of blurting it out without thinking. “I guess.”

“Hey,” she said with more volume than she’d used before. “Would you mind looking at me so I can see if you’re telling the truth?”

He forced himself to look straight at her. She was beautiful. But not in the glamorous movie star way he’d expected. She wore very little makeup, not that she needed any at all. The color of her skin reminded him of rich buttermilk, and her hazel eyes carried a beguiling sparkle. They were very expressive and probably her defining feature. Along with that marquee smile he had yet to see.

“Do you have a superpower that allows you to detect lies?”

Her mouth inched up into an almost-smile. “Yes, I do. It’s a side effect of being ridiculously famous.”

“Good to know. I was only moderately famous, so that’s a skill I don’t possess.” He was also fairly lousy at lying. How could he recognize it in someone else? He looked away from her, settling his gaze on the still-smoky kitchen. “I’ll do my best not to expose your secret.”

Darcy Burke is the USA Today bestselling author of hot, action-packed historical and sexy, emotional contemporary romance. Darcy wrote her first book at age 11, a happily-ever-after about a swan addicted to magic and the female swan who loved him, with exceedingly poor illustrations.
A native Oregonian, Darcy lives on the edge of wine country with her guitar-strumming husband, their two hilarious kids-who each seem to have inherited the writing gene in some form-and two Bengal cats. In her “spare” time Darcy is a serial volunteer enrolled in a 12-step program where one learns to say “no,” but she keeps having to start over. Her happy places are Disneyland and Labor Day weekend at the Gorge.

This was a fun book to read.  You have a sweet guy, protective of his elderly landlords who is suspicious of the granddaughter he never knew existed suddenly showing up.   There’s sexy flirting and hot sex, and then there’s the heartwarming side of watching Jess and her grandparents embrace knowing each other.
