The single dad & the nanny ...

Burned by an ex with a wandering eye, Austin Rhodes has sworn off women. His sole focus is his young daughter - and despite his good intentions, the little girl's live-in nanny. He hired Mia Atwood to care for his child but he finds himself lusting after her instead. Keeping his distance isn’t easy but he’s determined to be a gentleman. Until Mia's past comes back to haunt her and she’s in need of Austin’s brand of protection. Suddenly she’s his in every sense of the word — and he’ll do whatever it takes to shield the woman who tempts him beyond reason.

Fast paced, endearing and spicy! I really enjoyed the next story in the Bodyguard Bad Boys series by Carly Phillips. The characters are super easy to connect with, the plot is intriguing and the chemistry is explosive. There were a few places that could have been built on more, but the characters draw you in to such a degree that you are willing to forgive the quickness of the story. Overall, a great read!

Single dad Austin Rhodes would do anything for his young daughter. Have a live-in nanny, finagle his work schedule around his time with her, be there for all of her important moments, anything to keep her happy. When something threatens that happiness, he won’t hesitate to strike out!

Mia Atwood has been the nanny for a few months now and adores his daughter. The atmosphere of the house is an ideal place to work … well … except for the little niggling thing around the edge of the surface … lust! She can’t stop eyeing up his luscious body every chance she gets behind his back, but they are definitely keeping it strictly professional … well … until the past comes back to haunt them and he needs to step up and protect her … then the close quarters might make that professional thing a little tricky!

Excerpt:

“So what’s your end game?”

”She paused, lowering the cup from her lips. “You’ll laugh. Or at the very least you won’t think it’s overly ambitious.”

He ignored his coffee, more interested in the fascinating woman sitting beside him. “Try me.”

“Someday I’d like a family of my own. A lot of kids not all mine. Kids who’ve been in foster care too long and never adopted because everyone wants babies.”She rubbed her cup between her palms, not meeting his gaze. “See? Nothing all that enterprising, like becoming a teacher or succeeding in business.”

He couldn’t stop staring, enthralled not just by her beauty but by her heart. “I think it’s inspiring, what you want to do.”And the man by her side when she fulfilled her dreams would be one lucky SOB. “Not for me, because been there, done that…the family and marriage thing, but I’m sure it can work for the right couple.”He shrugged, realizing he’d admitted way too much. “I hope you find what you’re looking for,”he said, meaning it.

She glanced down, her gaze sweeping over her watch on her wrist. “Oh! It’s time to pick up Bailey.”She crumbled the napkin beside her and picked up her cup as she rose to her feet.

He stood, joining her as they tossed their half-finished drinks in the trash. They headed to the car and he beat her there, opening the passenger door before she could grab the handle herself. He turned back and she stopped short. He caught her before she bumped into him, grasping her around the waist and pulling her close. She sucked in a surprised breath but didn’t back away, her face inches from his. Her mouth so damned close.

He knew better, he really did but he was tired of denying himself what he wanted and his body was definitely on board. He waited for a sign she wasn’t right there with him. If she pulled back or jerked away, he’d apologize and they’d move forward from there. Instead she swayed toward him, sealing her fate.

He grasped her waist, anchoring himself by touching her, the soft sweater doing little to hide her slender body or delicate curves. He tipped his head, sliding his tongue across her lips and with a soft moan, she parted her mouth and let him inside. She tasted of vanilla and coffee, a sweet flavor that was all Mia.

Their tongues touched, tangled, and his body came alive with a hunger he hadn’t known before.

She raised her arms, hands coming to his biceps, holding on for a brief second before she gave in and wrapped her arms around him, pulling him close, giving him all the excuse he needed to deepen the kiss. He tilted his head and consumed her, swirling his tongue around the further recesses of her mouth.

He had no wall, no car door to push her against, which was a good thing because he wouldn’t have been able to control himself if he crushed his body against hers.

Persistence and bravery for the win! With the next book in her Rocky Mountain Cowboys series, Karen Rock brings us the story of a young lady who thought she had it all until a devastating medical condition arose that she felt ended all of her hopes and dreams. Love and support of family and the best friend a gal could have rallies around her and sets out to show her that life doesn’t end just because you are now faced with more challenges. It’s uplifting and inspirational to anyone who has ever felt less than. A well-built plot with many familiar characters. The storyline drug a bit in the beginning as a lot of inner thoughts were being portrayed rather than dialogue, but overall an enjoyable, uplifting read!

Champion barrel racer Amberley James has the world on a string … or so it seems when everything is going her way and she can see the possibility of making all of her dreams come true being in reach … and then it all comes crashing down around her. She knew she had been having some weird things going on with her eyesight, but she was never expecting the doctor to tell her that she had a genetic disorder that was making her go blind! Her life is over. She can’t possibly ever do anything she loved again.

Rancher and football star Jared Cade has been best friends with Amberley for years. They push each other to be the best that they can be, they offer support throughout life’s ups and downs, and they always cheer each other on from the sideline. He knows something’s going on with her, but she’s kept him in the dark as to what it is … until it can’t be hidden any longer. Jared is devastated for her naturally, but he refuses to stand by and watch her hide herself away from the world in shame and give up the dreams she’s worked so hard for! He’ll do anything he has to in order to get her out there dreaming big again.

In BAYSIDE PASSIONS...
When Emery Andrews's best friend, Desiree, moves away, falls in love, and opens an inn all in one summer, she feels her absence like a missing limb. Until she visits over the holidays and meets sinfully hot Dean Masters, who's as easy on the eyes as he is to talk to. After returning home, what starts as a flurry of late-night flirtations quickly turns into a deep connection and unexpected friendship. Now, months later, Desiree offers Emery a job teaching yoga at the inn. Adventurous Emery jumps at the chance and heads for Wellfleet, Massachusetts, to reunite with her BFF and her new close friend, Dean.

After months of sharing their lives, and their secrets, over video chats and phone calls, Dean's ready to move things to the next level. The fact that Emery seems oblivious to the sparks between them and has recently put her foot down about dating friends just means he'll have to bide his time.

When Emery finds a naked man in her kitchen the first morning she's there, Dean doesn't hesitate to move her into his guest room. Maybe now Emery will see what's right before her eyes--although that guy she's got a date with might be a problem.

Sweet, sexy and oh so fun! In her magical way, Melissa Foster has us falling for this couple and hanging on her every word as their relationship plays out as usual. She’s always an easy, fast paced story-teller with feisty yet good-hearted characters and a well-developed setting of relaxation, beautiful scenery and a large support-team of life-long friends and family. The strife was a little light in this particular book, as Emery gave in a little too easily based on how opinionated and independent she was written to be, but it was still a really enjoyable story!

When Emery Andrews’s best friend Desiree fell in love and moved to Wellfleet, Massachusetts, she never thought she would be following along a few months later … but here she is, rocking it! She’s missed her bestie like a lost limb, and she can’t wait to get into town and get started teaching yoga at Desiree’s inn. The fact that she also became the best of friends with steaming hot Dean Masters over phone calls, texts and late night skype sessions since she met him during a visit over the holidays doesn’t hurt matters either. She’s going to love living here!

Dean is overjoyed Emery is in town. He’s been falling for her for months now and having her up close and personal will have them in a relationship in no time … only … she acts like they’re only friends … what’s up with that? Good thing he’s patient, because he’s going to have to be willing to let her get her head wrapped around the fact that she can have a true relationship with him without self-sabotaging … because she deserves it!

EXCERPT:

After a nice long shower, she dried her hair and threw on a pair of cutoffs and a peach tank top, all the while hoping Desiree had enjoyed amazing sex last night so she’d make one of her delicious, fancy breakfasts. She assumed Violet had had a fun night, although they hadn’t made any noise that she could remember. Could Violet have had bad sex? Maybe it really isn’t the length of the sword, but how expertly they wield it. She laughed to herself, imagining if that had been the case, Violet would have kicked his butt out of the house long before morning.

She headed over to the inn to question Desiree about long-dong naked man. Cosmos, the dog Desiree and Violet had inherited along with the house, greeted Emery at the kitchen door, yapping and trying to crawl up her legs. He was some sort of terrier mix, with pointy ears, mostly gray, wiry fur, and big brown eyes. She scooped up the scruffy pup and he licked her chin. “Hey there, matchmaker.”

Desiree’s mother had lived in the house for a few months before tricking Desiree and Violet to come out and stay there last summer. Unbeknownst to them, as part of a grand matchmaking scheme to bring Rick and Desiree together, Lizza had trained Cosmos to climb the fence and swim in the pool at Bayside Resort. It had worked so well, and Desiree was so happy, Emery almost wished Cosmos would work some magic for her.

That would take a miracle.

Not a single person in her family seemed to know how to have a lasting relationship. They were a boisterous, opinionated bunch, and because of that, she knew they were not easy partners. Her brothers were constantly flirting and rarely held their tongues. She had the not-holding-her-tongue thing down pat, and as for flirting? Well, she was pretty good in that department, too. The trouble was, several men she’d gone out with had accused her of flirting with other guys even when she wasn’t.

She stepped inside and set Cosmos on the kitchen floor. The sounds of spatulas on pans and laughter filled her ears. Desiree stood at the stove flipping pancakes. Dean, Rick, and Drake sat at the table, shirtless, their bronze physiques on display as they scarfed down breakfast. They were all athletic, but damn. Rick and Drake looked like boys next to Dean’s Adonis-like body. The way they were shoveling food into their mouths, she wondered if they’d run the entire length of the Cape. She might not find love, like Desiree had, but she knew she’d find plenty of other types of happiness here at the Cape.

“Hey, Em,” Desiree said.

The guys looked up, and Rick and Drake mumbled “good morning” around their food.

Dean smiled, lifting his chin in greeting as she plucked a piece of pancake from his plate and popped it in her mouth.

“Hey, doll. Sleep well?” Dean asked.

“Mm-hm.” She reached around him and grabbed his coffee, helping herself to a sip. Dean intercepted the mug before she could set it back down and took a gulp. “But the naked guy in the kitchen kind of threw me for a loop.”

Dean spit coffee all over the table. “What?”

“Watch it!” Drake flew from his chair, causing Cosmos to bark and setting Emery and Desiree laughing.

“Jesus, Dean.” Rick brushed coffee from his chest. “What the hell?”

Dean grumbled something that sounded like “sorry,” his angry eyes locked on Emery. “What naked man?”

Desiree tossed Rick a towel and said, “There was a naked guy in Violet’s kitchen?”

Emery shrugged. “Yup. Tall guy, well hung. Des, any idea who Violet’s banging these days?”

“No.” She handed Emery a plate of pancakes. “I know she has an old friend who lives in the area, but she refuses to tell me anything about him.”

“Well, they didn’t make a sound, so either I slept like a log or their tryst should go down in the Guinness Book of World Records for the quietest sex ever. Do you have a tent I can borrow for the next few days?” Emery asked.

“You’re staying at my place,” Dean said adamantly. He carried his plate to the sink and began scrubbing it clean.

“I can’t intrude on you,” Emery said. “I’ll mess up your mojo or something.”

He turned off the water and faced her, arms crossed, jaw tight. “My mojo is already messed up, and I’m pretty sure ‘or something’ follows you everywhere you go. You can, and you will, stay with me. It’s not safe for you to be around strange naked guys.”

“Think it’s safe for her to be around you?” Rick asked.

Dean glared at him.

“Dean would never hurt me.” Emery sat down at the table and speared a pancake from the platter Desiree set before her. “You sure you don’t mind, big guy? It’s actually perfect, considering I can walk there,” she teased. “But I have to warn you, I’m not the neatest person, and I suck at cooking, but I’ll—”

“Keep her out of your kitchen,” Desiree warned. “I’ve seen her cook. Not only will your kitchen never recover, but neither will your stomach.”

Truth,” Emery said, and ate another forkful of pancake.

“I don’t need you to cook or clean. Just stay out of my gardens and we’ll be fine.” Dean glared out the window over the sink at Violet’s cottage, looking like he was strategizing World War III.

“Okay, thanks. I’ll get my stuff after breakfast,” she said.

I’ll get your stuff and take it to my place while you eat,” Dean said. “I’m working in the hospital gardens today. I’ll make you a key while I’m out and text you when I get back.”

Before she could say a word, he stormed out the door.

“That’s a man on a mission,” Desiree said as she sat down beside Rick.

She needed a miracle.

She got a Texas Ranger.

Vivian Watts's mission to prove her brother's innocence has left her destitute and desperate. So when Texas Ranger Slate Thompson arrives with his knock-me-out blue eyes and belief in her case, she dares to hope again...until her apartment is burned to the ground. Slate offers refuge at his ranch, but when evidence suggests Vivian is being hunted...can he face down the real killer to protect her?

A possible case explodes into more than this Texas Ranger ever expected right before his eyes! With the 2nd book in the Texas Brothers of Company B series, we interact with a few familiar characters from the first book and jaunt off onto another case that leaves us chasing clues and trying to put all of the pieces together. This book is slightly unorthodox in that we know fairly early on who the bad guy is, but the danger and tricks that play out still keep us playing a guessing game on what’s going to happen. Really enjoyed overall, but felt the ending was a little rushed. I would have liked to have seen that play out slightly differently to have a satisfying resolution. Looking forward to more in the series!

Vivian Watts has given up everything and is so broke she’s on the verge of living on the streets in an effort clear her brother of the charge of murder that she just knows he didn’t commit. His trial is fast approaching and she’s just about given up hope that she will find any evidence quickly enough to stop his conviction, but one surprise visit from Texas Ranger Slate Thompson gives her the glimmer of hope she’s needed to keep her spirit to fight up!

Slate should know better than to go off on one of Wade’s hunches, but as soon as he looks at the case he’s shown him, he knows something is suspicious. Is her brother really guilty or is something funny going on at that hospital that seems to be the common denominator between this case and several others that weren’t even known about? When danger seems to be lurking just over Vivian’s shoulder, Slate will stop at nothing to keep her safe … and while he’s at it, they find themselves fighting attraction at every turn!

YOU NEVER FORGET YOUR FIRST LOVE

Jessica Flynn can't wait to buy up that patch of unspoiled North Carolina woodland next door and expand her spa. What could be more sensuous than a hot-tub soak under the stars? Jessica would love to bask in the romantic view herself-but first she needs to find the right man to join her in this fantasy. Back in high school, she thought that was the dark and brooding Mark Dalton. But then he left to join the Special Forces, and when he returned to town, it felt like their teenage love affair had never even happened.

Mark Dalton has his eye on the same property for his own business. Yet there's something he wants to have even more. Because Jessica is sweeter than he remembered, and he's finding it hard to resist his attraction to the competition. When they finally find themselves alone, deep in the forest, nature can't help but run a little wild. But if she ever finds out what he's been hiding all these years, she may never forgive him...

Once in awhile a first love burns so strong that it’s ever-lasting … and this book gives a great story detailing such a situation. It’s sweet, it’s sexy, it’s emotionally charged! If you’ve read the earlier books in this series, you’ll recognize most of the key players and will get an update on some of our favorite couples from the past. The storyline is well-developed with enough strife to keep us on pins and needles about whether they will be able to make a relationship work, but also a great amount of friendship, love and overall general warmth that makes for a close-knit cast of characters. I really enjoyed it!

Spa owner Jessica Flynn is excited to put in an offer on the newly listed piece of property adjacent to her spa! She’s been dreaming of expanding for years, and her opportunity is finally here. She feels like she’s walking around in the clouds until trouble is brought to her attention … the guys at Off-the-Grid Adventures want the property too, and none other than her high school sweetheart himself, Mark Dalton, is standing there with her realtor trying to burst her bubble!

It might have been years since he left Haven, NC, but Mark is still just as attracted to Jessica as he was the day he left her to join the Army. She has basically acted like he doesn’t exist for the last year since he’s been back in town, but now she’s being forced to interact with him. He knows he hurt her, and he also knows he’s not the type of man she needs if she’s looking to settle down … but man, the sparks that tear through him at the slightest touch of her hand tell him he needs to convince her to live it up with him a little!

A K-9 cop must protect a single mom as USA TODAY bestselling author Marie Ferrarella introduces the new Coltons of Red Ridge miniseries

Carson Gage has a crime to solve—the murder of his brother—and his number-one suspect is his archenemy, Serena Colton. The Coltons and Gages have feuded for generations; Carson is convinced the cowgirl is hiding his prime suspect on her ranch. But the beauty and her baby stir unwelcome yearnings in his calloused heart. After all, Carson has learned the hard way what vulnerability can cost. When Serena and her child become targets of a mysterious assailant, Carson’s protective urges take over. Can an irresistible attraction prove stronger than old family hatreds and help them capture a criminal?

Packed full of intrigue! With the first book in a new Colton’s spin-off series, The Colton’s of Red Ridge, Marie Ferrarella weaves in intricate story of secrets and deception that held my attention from start to finish. The characters are easy to like and you find yourself knee deep in wanting to figure out who the criminals they are searching for are. The ending was too abrupt for my liking, but we are left with a great lead-in for more to come in the series … looking forward to it!

When K-9 police detective Carson Gage sets out for a night on the town, the last thing he expects is to be working on solving a murder by the end of the night … especially when the victim is his very own brother! A kidnapping shattered their family…

Rena and Grant VanMeter lived every parent’s worst nightmare when their preschool daughter was abducted. Riddled with guilt and hoping time apart would help them heal, Rena made the hardest decision of her life. But stunning news reunites her with Grant. Rosie has been found.

Putting up a united front for their child’s sake isn’t as easy as they thought. Grant hasn’t forgiven Rena for taking her eyes off Rosie for a few critical seconds. And Rena has yet to forgive herself. But their little girl needs them more than ever…

A riveting story from start to finish! I was hooked immediately and couldn’t put it down. What a heart-wrenching subject! The characters had many conflicting thoughts and fears as they faced the daunting job of trying to put together a family that had been decimated years ago. Grant was a really hard man to like because he was so self-righteous, but on the other hand, you could understand why he felt the way he did … but then you only had to look at her and you crumbled because you could totally see yourself having done the exact same thing she did. It’s a very powerful story and I really enjoyed reading it. I felt the ending glossed over their true reunion much too quickly, but overall, a really nice read!

Grant and Rena Van Meter faced the evil that every parent fears five years ago and it shattered their family into pieces. Having their daughter disappear was like having the sunshine go out of their lives, and it left lasting ramifications. Grant couldn’t let go of his anger long enough to stop blaming Rena for taking her eyes off of Rosie for just a matter of seconds … because those seconds were all it took to have his little girl ripped from his life. Rena blamed herself as well, but the factor that had her giving up on ever healing the rift was Grant’s anger and blame.

Five years have passed, and while the rest of the world has continued on, the loss still dictates both of their lives … until the call comes in. They’ve found Rosie! Both Grant and Rena drop everything to run to her side and figure out a way to bring their family back together for the sake of Rosie’s readjustment and healing … but talk is one thing, and actually living it is another! Will Rena ever be able to redeem herself in Grant’s eyes or is this all just a waiting game until their relationship crumbles once and for all?

Brilliant and uptight emergency room doctor Alyssa Davenport has absolutely no desire to travel to Antigua to go cockle fishing. What the hell is a cockle anyway? But it’s time for her to fulfill a ridiculous New Year’s Eve pact with her best friends. Heck, maybe she’ll meet a hot fisherman who isn’t intimidated by her and looks at her as a woman instead of a doctor. Lord knows her body is screaming for a little attention.

Former New York stockbroker Brayden Adams takes one look at Alyssa and sees that she needs to relax. He’s known the feeling himself, until he and his best friend, Tyler, left the fast life behind when they inherited a hotel and fishing business in Antigua. Now they live a relaxed island life and share everything.

Stepping out of her comfort zone, Alyssa boldly goes after what she wants. Except there’s a bit of a snag, and the discovery leads her on a sexual adventure she could have never imagined. But when vacation is over, what happens next?

When the woman he’s been fantasizing about walks back into his life, Braydon Adams knows he’s just hit the jackpot of all opportunities! With a fun dip into menage, Cathryn Fox brings us the latest installment in her Dossier series. It wasn’t my favorite in the series because the backstory felt lacking … possibly if we had experienced their meeting back in New York it would have lent more substance … but none-the-less, it was an enjoyable spicy read!

ER doc Alyssa Davenport didn’t expect to find herself on an exotic vacation, but she finally can’t get out of paying up on her New Year’s bet with her besties, so here she is in Antigue! She just wants this craziness over and done with so she can get back home, but when she runs into a familiar face, she decides it might not be so bad here after all!

Braydon Adams hasn’t forgotten the sexy doctor that he met shortly before quitting his job and moving to Antigue with his best friend Tyler to run a hotel and fishing business. When she shows up on one of his fishing charters, he knows it won’t be long before he has her in his bed … but when surprising circumstances have him thinking she prefers Tyler to him, a crazy mix up leads to a fun time to be had by all!

Dax: After spending months buried up to my eyeballs in my family’s affairs, I’m ready for a break. The kind of break where I can spend two solid weeks camping and fishing in the company of absolutely no one. Then I find myself directly in the path of a drop-dead gorgeous tornado by the name of Becca Stone. Who can resist a night with a damsel in distress? Especially when she happens to be a leggy blonde? The last thing I expect is for Becca to show up on my cabin doorstep the next night, shivering in the rain and ready for seconds.

Becca: One minute I’m admiring the rock-hard jaw of the Magic Mike lookalike who walks into my bar, and the next I’m getting fired by my own brother. Loudly. In front of everyone. Luckily Dax Vaughn is a gentleman who aims his white-hot smile at me. Oh, it’s on. Wham, bam, thank you ma’am. Then a torrential storm washes out the main road and causes a massive power outage, giving us two whole weeks to enjoy each other’s company. At which point Dax will go back home, leaving “us” in the rearview mirror. That’s the plan. Or it was . . . until I started falling for him.

One night of sexy passion was all it was supposed to be … until they both wanted more! We’re quick to jump into action at the beginning of this story as the characters meet and have instant attraction, but I felt some substance was missing. The old gang from the previous books in the series popped up very little, so that old friendly banter that we knew and loved just wasn’t there nearly enough. An enjoyable read for sure … but not my favorite of the series.

Becca Stone just simply isn’t going to put up with her brother firing her in front of the customer’s at the bar … especially when one of them is smoking hot! He’ll forgive her for being late … he has to, he always does! Until then, she’ll distract herself having a little fun with the sexy newcomer!

Dax Vaughn is just passing through, but he’s willing to have the night of fun the wildcat from the bar offers up … only when morning comes, he wishes she’d stay around for awhile! When he gets more than he bargained for when the road washes out and strands her in his cabin, good times are had by all … but he might just be falling for her harder than she is for him!

New York Times bestselling author Kristan Higgins welcomes you home in this witty, emotionally charged novel about the complications of life, love and family

One step forward. Two steps back. The Tufts scholarship that put Nora Stuart on the path to becoming a Boston medical specialist was a step forward. Being hit by a car and then overhearing her boyfriend hit on another doctor when she thought she was dying? Two major steps back.

Injured in more ways than one, Nora feels her carefully built life cracking at the edges. There’s only one place to land: home. But the tiny Maine community she left fifteen years ago doesn’t necessarily want her. At every turn, someone holds the prodigal daughter of Scupper Island responsible for small-town drama and big-time disappointments.

With a tough islander mother who’s always been distant, a wild-child sister in jail and a withdrawn teenage niece as eager to ditch the island as Nora once was, Nora has her work cut out for her if she’s going to take what might be her last chance to mend the family. Balancing loss and opportunity, dark events from her past with hope for the future, Nora will discover that tackling old pain makes room for promise…and the chance to begin again.

A witty journey of self-discovery! With recovery in mind, a broken woman makes the decision to fight her demons and return home to the place where sunshine once lived before turning into darkness and despair. She sets out to follow her memories of the times when she felt like life was rosy and fun and puts forth a huge effort to reconnect with her family and the community. Meeting glares and resistance at every turn, she has to dig deep and find answers within herself that leave her pushing forward and overcoming the adversity she faces to find answers and a brighter future around the bend. The characters are well-developed, the turmoil is strife with tears and a smidgen of laughter as Kristan Higgins throws in her signature snark and sass to bring a laugh to life in the most awkward of times … and overall, it’s a very entertaining read!

When Dr. Nora Stuart woke up from being hit by a car to find her live-in boyfriend flirting with another woman at her bedside, she realizes it’s time for some time apart! After having her life flash before her eyes during her unconsciousness, she’s not sure what to make of the fact that she envisioned so little affected by her “death”. She decides to stop avoiding the little island she was anxious to flee all those years ago and go home again.

It’s not all puppies and rainbows when she arrives. Her cantankerous mother seems to care less that she was injured, her sister is in prison leaving her surly teenage daughter in their mother’s care and desperately seeking a way out of this one-horse town, the community still blames her for the demise of the town golden boy simply because she was smarter than him, and her ex continues to try to woo her back home … just another day in paradise I guess!

Finally learning the answers to why her family fell apart all those years ago is enlightening and brings with it a peace at finally knowing that it wasn’t anything she had done wrong. Hard work and dedication leads to rediscovery of memories that squeeze her heart and make her more forgiving of times she was wronged, and finding a special guy on the Island with an equally special daughter who both think she’s got potential, makes for an interesting trip!

EXCERPT:

In which Nora Stuart, MD, has just been hit by a van from Beantown Bug Killers and now lies in the hospital, assuming she’s died.

How will my dog cope with this?

My soul, it seemed, wasn’t ready to leave just yet, still hung up on the concerns of the material world.

Poor Boomer, the Dog of Dogs, my sweet little hundred-pound puppy who protected me and came into the bathroom when I showered to stand guard just in case someone broke in, Boomer who loved me with all his giant heart, who would put his head on my leg, who asked for nothing other than an ear scratch, who was afraid of pigeons but adored ducks… No one would love him the way I did. He’d be sad and confused for the rest of his life.

I knew I shouldn’t have waited for stupid Bobby! And why the hell was I the one getting the pizza? Why hadn’t I stood up for myself and told beautiful, snotty Jabrielle to go her damn self? She was a resident! I was a fully vested doctor, thank you!

But I hadn’t, and now I was dead.

I hope we can still go with open casket.

I had often envisioned my funeral, me lying against the rose-colored satin looking utterly stunning, the sadder songs of U2 and Ed Sheeran playing gently in the background while my friends wept and laughed over their precious memories of me. Closed casket was not part of the scenario, hit by Beantown Bug Killers or not. I wondered if my face was smooshed in. Eesh.

I have nothing to wear to my funeral.

Granted, in life I’d been a clothes whore, at least during the past fifteen years or so. But for my funeral, I wanted something special. The navy-blue-and-white polka-dotted Brooks Brothers dress I’d been eyeing, or that pink floral Kate Spade. But maybe that would be too festive.

I’ll never meet Daniel Radcliffe now.

It had always been a long shot, I knew that, but I’d imagined stalking him after he did a show on Broadway, waiting by the side door, our eyes meeting, his inimitable smile, going out for a drink, sharing our favorite moments from Harry Potter, me finding out that he, too, hated the destruction of Hogwarts and agreed that Ron was nowhere near worthy of Hermione. Now, with me dead, it definitely wasn’t gonna happen.

True, no one was acting like I was dead, but I was fairly certain I was. Maybe they just hadn’t noticed yet. I guessed this ER wasn’t quite the be-all and end-all of modern medicine, was it? I thought I’d heard the words “dislocated patella” and “ortho consult” and “trauma alert.” I was pretty sure I’d seen the tunnel of light, but my spirit was tuning in and out.

What was that beeping? It was really hurting my head.

I’d read about this kind of thing happening. Out-of-body experiences. The soul lingering a little while before heading for the afterlife. Did I know anyone who’d greet me from heaven? My dad, maybe, if he was dead? That mean-ass grandmother of mine who used to tell me I was fat? I hoped she wasn’t there. Who else? Maybe that sweet patient who’d died of pancreatic cancer during my fellowship. God, I had loved her. My first fatality.

“So she’s your girlfriend?” someone asked. I knew that voice. Jabrielle. Couldn’t miss that hint of sneer.

“Yeah.” Bobby.

Was he about to start sobbing? Wait, did Bobby have to call the code on me? Or had be been hysterical, calling my name, having to be dragged out by two burly orderlies? Either way, the poor, poor man. Dang, I wished I remembered! I guess I’d shown up a little late to my own death. Which did seem to happen a lot in the movies.

The beeping was persistent and annoying.

“How long have you been together?” Jabrielle again.

“Oh, a little more than a year. It’s funny, though. I was gonna break up with her this weekend.” A pause. “She’s not in the best shape anyway.” Gentle laughter.

I almost smiled.

Wait. What?

Did Bobby just break up with me?

I was barely even cold! Did he—Was he—

“So what will you do?” Jabrielle asked.

“It would be pretty shitty to dump her now, I guess.”

A female purr. “Well, when you’re a free man, give me a call.”

“Wish I didn’t have to wait so long.”

Are you even kidding me?

No. No, no. I was dead. I didn’t care about these things. Soon, I’d be floating up to the stars or something.

But just in case, I decided to try to open my eyes.

Oh, shit. I wasn’t dead. I was in the ER. That beeping sound was the heart monitor, nice and regular, 78 beats per minute, O2 sat 98 percent, BP 130/89, a little high, but given the pain, not unexpected.

And Bobby was fondling a piece of Jabrielle’s hair.

“Do you mind?” I said, my voice croaking.

They jumped apart.

“Hey! You’re awake! Take it easy, hon, you’re gonna be okay.” Bobby took my hand—ow, my shoulder!—and smiled reassuringly. He did have the prettiest blue eyes. “You were hit by a car.”

“Beantown Bug Killers,” Jabrielle added.

“Did I die?”

Bobby smirked. “You have a concussion—we scanned you, but you’re fine. Bruised kidneys, broken clavicle and a patellar dislocation, which we reduced…we had to sedate you for that. You’re splinted, and we’re waiting on ortho to check you out. Can you feel your toes?”

Everything hurt. My back, my head, my shoulder, my knee. I was one giant throb of pain. But whatever they’d given me made it so I didn’t really care.

I guess my tunnel of light had been the CAT scan.

“I want another doctor,” I said.

“Hon, don’t be that way.”

“Bite me. You were flirting over my corpse.” I pulled my hand free. Ow.

He rolled his eyes. “You weren’t dead, Nora.”

Fury blotted out the pain for a second. “Well, I thought I was. Get out. Both of you. Don’t be surprised if I file a complaint for unprofessional conduct. And call Gus to walk Boomer.”

The tug of the sedation or concussion pulled me back under, and before the door had closed, I was asleep again.

***

When I woke up, I was in a regular hospital room, Bobby asleep in the chair beside me. Some weary white carnations were in a vase next to me, their edges brown. If that wasn’t a metaphor for our relationship, I didn’t know what was. I sensed that moving would be very painful, so I breathed carefully and took stock.

My left arm was in a sling. A brace of some kind was on my right leg. My back hurt, my abdomen ached, and my head throbbed, little flashes of light in my peripheral vision with every heartbeat.

But I was alive. Apparently, the concussion and drugs had given me that out-of-body feeling.

Bobby stirred, never a good sleeper. Opened his eyes. “Hey. How you feeling?”

“Okay.”

“Do you remember what happened?”

“Hit by a van.”

“That’s right. You were crossing the street, and you got hit. Besides the patellar dislocation, your left clavicle is broken, and you’ve got fractures in the sixth and seventh ribs on the left. Pretty good concussion, too. The trauma team admitted you for a night or two.”

“Did you call Gus?”

“Huh? Oh, yeah.” He was quiet for a moment, then leaned forward. “I’m sorry about Jabrielle.”

Surprisingly, my throat tightened, and tears welled in my eyes, slipping down my temples into my hair. “At least you made it easy,” I whispered.

“Made what easy?”

“Breaking up. I can’t really overlook you hitting on another woman when I’m bruised and battered in the ER, can I?”

He looked ashamed. “I really am sorry. That wasn’t classy at all.”

“No.”

“Roseline came by. I called her. She’s upstairs on L and D, but she’ll come down later.”

“Great.”

We were quiet for a few minutes.

Once, I thought I’d marry Bobby Byrne. Once, I thought he’d be lucky to have me. But somewhere in the midst of our year and change together—after the Big Bad Event—I got lost. What was once a bright and shiny penny had become dirty and dull and useless, and it was high time I admitted it.

Bobby hadn’t loved me for a long time.

I was going to need help for the next few weeks. Concussions were serious business, and with my injured arm and leg, I had mobility concerns. I’d need help, and I wasn’t about to stay with Bobby.

Problem was, we lived together. Roseline was a newlywed; otherwise, I’d stay with her. Other friends…no.

“I want to go home,” I said.

“Sure. Tomorrow. I’ll take a few days off.”

“I meant home. To the island.”

Bobby blinked. “Oh.”

Strangely enough, I wanted my mother. I wanted the pine trees and rocky shores. I wanted to sleep in the room I hadn’t slept in for fifteen years.

I wanted to see my sister.

Yes. I’d go home, as one does after a brush with death. I’d take a leave of absence from the practice and go back to Scupper Island, make amends with my mother, spend some time with my niece, wait for my sister to come back and…well…reassess. I might not have died, but it was close enough. I had another chance. I could do better.

“And I’m bringing Boomer,” I added.
